Aye buy now before the deal is introduced and prices rise, when current deals are removed at the end of the month.

Think you need to do some more personal research Spikey and get upto speed on the general price of cars.
  • The UK scheme does not start until 18th May. There is no process yet for the Govt's share of the £2k to be paid to dealers.
Many smaller cars don't even have a £1k margin in them between the manuf'r and the dealer, so to 'create' £1k spare in it the prices of new cars will need to go up. This is why the scheme does not start for a while yet...manufacturers need to decide if they can afford to opt in, and with which models, and to then agree a process with the govt.
It could mean the biggest one-step way to increase car prices for everyone in the UK, not just those drivers wanting to find a miracle £1k extra from the dealers in the car if they want to use the scrap scheme.

You cannot hope that on small hatches where margins were already slim that the current discounts and prices will stay in place...it is impossible. For example, Suzuki Alto and Mitsu Colt's have only about £400 in them between the mfr and the dealer, so if they have to find £1k towards a scrap car too, then it is clearly impossible as they are £600 short of cash on those cars even if they sell at zero profit. The only way to find that £1k is to put those prices up by at least £600k...or opt out of offering the scheme
The Govt really did not think this one through.

Well it is either that or all those new cars remain unsold and the manufacturers lose their entire value. We are in a world recession and there is no reason to think that things will improve just because it has always been cyclic in the past.
  • This scheme (which I was not in favour of) was demanded by the motor industry itself.

If they fail to put a fresh £1,000 in to match taxpayers' subsidy, then as the UK taxpayer money in the equation, the manufacturers are surely embezzling their half of the bargain. I have posted a thread here showing how FIAT are simply rebranding current discounts as "Eco Bonus" in one advert, while just offering them as unbranded discount in other adverts. Why should my tax money be used to allow FIAT to make exactly the same profit on twice as many new cars?

The scheme is not designed to increase profitability. It is designed to create a resurgence in demand for new cars, it is a volume-booster (not a profit-booster). If taxpayers money is being used and not matched by manufacturers, then I for one am very annoyed.

In that case, the UK taxpayer is simply and blatantly subsidising foreign-owned car firms. We should demand an equal injection of (fresh) money from car manufacturers to match the taxpayer subsidy.
