moving to glasgow

Hi,

I am shortly moving to Glasgow from London.

I would love to hear some recommendations from Glaswegians for an up and coming part of Glasgow or somewhere nearby.

Thanks very much!

Glasgow is a lovely city with wonderful architecture. The people are very friendly.
Where to buy? Anywhere in the outskirts or preferably outside the city as commuting is very easy. I would look at Ayrshire or South Lanarkshire.

Here in Coatbridge (North Lanarkshire), just outside Glasgow is up and coming. Good motorway links and 3 railway lines into Glasgow, the quickest of which take 20 and 30 minutes respectfully into the city centre.

The town has had a lot of new housing built recently and prices have gone up a lot in that time. The rises are mostly because they were so cheap by our standards and peanuts by London standards.

For example a quality 2 bedroom flat near a railway station in centre of town is £80k maximum with private car park into the bargain.

Depends on how much you have to spend. West end is nice but expensive. There are plenty of nice places south of the river that tend to be cheaper but further away from the centre. But there is quite a good public transport system so being further away is not that much of a problem.

The Gorbals has improved a lot from how it used to be. ALthough I'm still not sure I'd want to live there
  • thanks for the comments. Probably a two-bed flat in the west end is going to cost more than I have to spend (c. 125k). How about some other districts in Glasgow?

As for the Gorbals. No:) Although some of the outlying towns sound like they are well worth a visit.
  • It is a while since I was around Glasgow area. Newton Mearns is nice (but again, probably expensive - perhaps not as much as west end). Parts of East Kilbride are ok.
Shawlands has lots of flats but quite busy.

I think it depends on your circumstances and whether you have kids and are concerened about local schools.

Jim----log in to GSPC and it will give you an idea of prices in specific areas then it will be easier for us to advise you and of course it will give you a good idea too.

I used to live in Cathcart, south glasgow, right next to the railway line, Castlebrae Gardens where the 2 bedroom flats go for about 100k and the same for Victoria Mansions all on the Old Castle Road. Nice area and not too far from the city centre, 3 miles.
