Yes

I had a Fujitsu drive go on me in a PC just over a year old. Luckily the PC was under two year guarantee and the disc lasted long enough so that the service guy could transfer the contents to a new one.

It just reads the S.M.A.R.T information from the drive, there's numerous third party programs which do the same;

Don't rely on software though, you can always preempt a problem just by listening to the noise they make. If they start making different noises, you're starting to get a problem and you should ensure whatever you need on that drive is backed up elsewhere..
