I had a Fujitsu drive go on me in a PC just over a year old. Luckily the PC was under two year guarantee and the disc lasted long enough so that the service guy could transfer the contents to a new one.Whilst I agree in principle, In the 15 years that I've had a Pc at home, I've never had a drive die on me.

That sounds intresting, does it just work on segate drives?
It just reads the S.M.A.R.T information from the drive, there's numerous third party programs which do the same;
HDTune
CrystalDiskInfo
Don't rely on software though, you can always preempt a problem just by listening to the noise they make. If they start making different noises, you're starting to get a problem and you should ensure whatever you need on that drive is backed up elsewhere..0
