OP needs Hit windows key and Pause/Break then click the Advanced tab...
Where it says Performance, click settings and click Advanced Tab.
At the bottom it will say Virtual Memory, click Change.
Click on the C: drive and click where it says custom size. Type 1000 in the two boxes, click OK then apply and so on and so forth, may need to reboot.....
Yep, but because the physical memory is too small, it has to start using an area of hard disk as memory as well, which IIRC is called virtual memory. So increasing the physical memory will get rid of this message.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Increasing the Virtual memory will also get rid of this error message and is an awful lot cheaper than going and buying (probably) SD memory which will be of no use if the OP buys a new system.....:rolleyes:To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

But does that not just thrash the life out of the hard drive? Probably cheaper to buy the memory now than a new hard drive!:DNorthern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Increasing virtual isnt going to get the computer running anywhere NEAR as good as if it had 1 gig or ram (Or even 750 if it cant use 1 gig)
This however is an OLD thread but by all means ~ slag away...........:idea:0 -

Not if the OP intends buying a new system Duh.... Why throw money after a dead horse......
I would be loathed to put 1G of memory in a PII system. I would rather take a sledge hammer to it and spend a tenner on a PIII system....
In fact the OP could probably get a better system for free from FreeCycle.... lolTo travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -

But the OP doesn't want to buy a new computer! :rotfl: They thought it would be more cost effective to just upgrade this one. (Well they didn't at a time, maybe they do now!)
But certainly, if the computer with the specs above does exist, then that would be the best option.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

But it's the OP who has brought it back to life again!:D
But you're right, maybe they aren't interested in fixed up the old one anymore?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Hi guys, thanks for your help, the computer i have now runs xp on 320 ram, a little slow i grant you but it does work, not sure if its more ram as it had a dimm module fitted a while back, not sure of size.
I was toying with the idea of just increasing the memory, but
a) can i still get the memory dimms for this dinosaur
b) how much will it cost both labour and parts
c) how much will i have to pay to get ms access, excel, powerpoint etc, i only have word on my current computer and im currently at college learning excel and powerpoint
so folks which works out best, 2nd hand tower for £100 all ready to go or to faff around upgrading memory and goodness knows what else?
ThanksAnd yes the lady in the avatar is me

I'll save you a trip to PC World and tell you what they'd tell you; Buy a new PC.
Except I wouldn't recommend buying it from them.achtunglady wrote: »Been offered a tower with windows xp, microsoft excel, access, powerpoint, word, front page, outlook

If it is 3.3 ghz (sure its not 3.2 though? ) and the programmes are all legal copies, then yes, its a decent deal - however I would make sure it comes with at least an 80 gig hard drive, a dvd rom (or writer!) and i'd buy another 512mb (or, if the motherboard allows, 1gig) stick of ram. Should be able to get the ram s/h for about £5-100
