Well, the good news is that this virus can be fought using the anti-virals that were stockpiled for bird flu. I guess that won't help people in poorer countries without such facilities if it spreads there as well.

But it will help the unemployment figures & the Government debt situation...

Fear of pandemic as killer flu strain spreads

"A deadly strain of flu that combines elements of swine, avian and human viruses appears to have begun to spread around the world after emerging simultaneously in Mexico and the United States.

Michael Osterholm, a pandemic flu expert at the University of Minnesota, said that new cases were probably already incubating around the world."

Hmm, I'm thinking that looks very like an engineered bio-terror weapon; can't imagine who would be wanting to do that unless they love death more than we love life!

    Preparing for an Emeregency

Flu strains have appeared to emerge simultaneously in the past in distant parts of the world, there was the usual explanation that it was because a passing comet or visiting aliens from other planets.

Never really explained - only that cases may well have been in the US and europe for that matter since March but not recognised as such until it is highlighted, after all the incidence of flu was increasing in Mexico all through March - so not just in the last few days . After all most GPs see "flu like illness " most of the time - we don;t sample them to confirm the diagnosis or see if there is a new strain.

Pharmaceuticals may be worth a punt if this takes off.

If it helps, Tamiflu is manufactured by Roche. Relenza was developed by a team of scientists at the Victoria College of Pharmacy at Monash Uni (threw that in for Gen as it's Australian) and is currently marketed by GlaxoSmithKline.

Amcluesent, if I forced you, could you pick a favourite out of:
    • mass flu pandemic
    • global war on a huge scale
    • mass economic meltdown and ensuing chaos
I know they all float your doom-boat, but which one would really get the old 'cluesent juices flowing?

Americans told to wear masks as swine flu spreads round globe

Experts concerned about potential flu pandemic

Sickness and mortality worst for those aged 15 to 45, doesn't look too clever for the economy if that group are dropping like flies. Medics now dying in Mexico
