Central Heating Quote

First time poster on here, but have been lurking around reading for years :)

I've just had a quote for replacing my old central heating system. Old system is around 30 years old and given up on us.

Quote is £3,400 including VAT for the following:
14.3l/min Vokera combi
13 x new rad's with thermostats
bypass valves
Removal of old hot water tank and cold tanks
All labour and materials etc.

Basically it's £3,400 all in.

Does this sound like a good quote?

Thanks,

Found the boiler for #720.00 on 2 different sites with 2 year's quarantee.

Rads - obviously depends on size etc. Do you need 13 new ones?

Sounds on the high side to me but I'm sure others will comment. How many quotes have you had?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

The boiler is not the best to be honest. The price would be very good if all the radiators were a good make like stelrad or myson.
I would ask for a german boiler though!

It's a terrible quote. Anything more than cost price plus £80 per man day is a rip-off, ask any tradesman - they are glad to get any sort of work in this credit crunch.

P.S. Don't be fooled into paying extra for copper pipe, fittings etc - they are free.

A little bit more info on my quote @ £3,400 inc vat and no hidden costs no matter what extra work comes up.

Vokera boiler was chosen as we have local Vokera Engineers for warranty work. Also everyone I spoke to said get pretty much any German boiler or a Vokera or Gloworm. It is a Vokera 35HE.

System is to be flushed, treated, the usual stuff etc as recommended.

Yes we need to replace all our rads, we have 14 rads, but I am doing away with one in the hallway as it was never used in almost 3 years. There is still another rad in the hallway about 2-3 meters away which is enough to heat that area. All the old rads are showing signs of corrosion and are sludged up. I have had to bleed a few in the past and the water coming out of them isn't pretty. They are all thick walled and take for ever to heat up.

All 13 new rads are Purmo which I 'think' is a good high efficient make and as far as I am aware ain't cheap rubbish. All rads except 1 are large and all are double convector except maybe 3 of them. By large I mean all are from 600 to 700 high by 600 to 800 wide or the shorter ones are 450 high by 1100 to 1300 wide. The only small one we have is for the ensuite and its about 450 x 500 I think.

All old stuff - 25 year old boiler, hot water tank, cold tank, reserve tank, pipe work, 14 rads are to be taken out and disposed of.

New boiler is to be located on end wall and hole drilled through about 1-2 feet of granite.

The main gas pipe from outside is to be upgraded to a larger size, run around the outside of the house (easily 20 meters) at first floor height and brought in through one room under the floor then into the utility room. The house is very old (200 years ish I'm told) and was an old lodge converted into two houses. The floors have that thick woodchip type boards instead of floor boards so complete panels need to be removed or cut up to allow access to the pipe work. The joists all run the wrong way for passing the gas pipe so will have to be notched out. The floors are also packed with several inches ash for insulation and sound deadening which all adds to the mess.

The boiler and hot water tank is in the utility room on the first floor while the cold tank and reserve tank are in a hatch above the berdoom on the mezzanine floor. The house is quirky with a characteristic layout so lots of up/down, left right turns to get lost in and lots of all over the place pipe work to trace, remove, modify, upgrade. The job is estimated to take about 7 working days.

Oh and the old boiler is a big beast which is a 3-4 man lift and has to go down a long flight of stairs.

I was pretty happy with the quote until I posted on here, now I'm not too sure!

It is pretty much what we would quote for the same job - ignore what EliteHeat said - as a previous poster said, it was tongue in cheek (I hope)
If you are happy with the quote, and happy with the people who gave the quote then go ahead with it and dont worry about what other people say. You can check they are fully qualified to do the work on GasSafe register.
Perhaps, just to ease your mind you could ask the tradesman for names and telephone numbers of previous people he put systems in for and you could contact them to see if they are happy with the work they did.
As a business ourself, and confident in our work we would not mind if someone wanted to do that.

Shame is - it is a crap boiler!!

Will probably cost you more than that over 2 years in repairs.

Get hold of a decent boiler - I recommend Which and that is nowhere near a best buy!!

Best buy boilers alone will cost you a max of £850 depending on size. The rest is labour. Work back from that - LOL - for 2 days work MAX they are getting a good hourly rate no??

It has 2 year warranty. How come it is crap? I know a couple of guys with this boiler fitted and they are 100% happy. I also know people with other 'better' boilers which have had to be repaired several times. I guess it's the luck of the draw, or do Vokera actually make bad boilers?

I repair 8-10 boilers a day and to be honest problems with vokera boilers are few and far between but when i do get them they always seem to be crappy intermittant faults or poor installations causing faults. They seem to be a tough boiler to work on. In my oppinon these boilers are the choice of cowboys who want to do a cheep job, luckly for me i dont work on them too much. I also have not heard of the make of radiators you are having so they are probably cheep and nasty too. If you want a quality job pay for the best or you will have problems mark my word.

I gaurantee you in 2-3 years time you will be on this forum asking for assistance in repairing your boiler, if you dont want the advice dont ask but you will find this is general concensus amongst gas engineers!
