FYI, the senior civil service is already preparing for a Tory administration, by giving briefings to the shadow cabinet and openly discussing how to implement Tory policies.

I would like a National Government... maybe, a Tory and Lib Dem one... we need a period of government where politicians put away their differences and actually work to sort out the real problems that face this nation.

I think we will get a conservative government, and I am afraid the Treasury View very much still exists in the tory party... I do want us to repay the national debt, but I am afraid they would cut too quickly, and cause the second great depression.

The civil service ALWAYS briefs the shadow cabinet, and it's duty is to implement the polciy of whatever government is in charge and prepare for a change of government.

I voted conservative. What worries me though is that they will only be in for one term because it will be the term when everyone has to pay for labour's mistakes. Then labour will get in again, mess up the economy again, rinse and repeat.

In some ways I'd like labour to get in again just so that they would have to face up to the mess that they made but I fear too much for the damage they would cause if that was the case.

Yep, after 18 years in power the Conservatives had really sorted this country out - why on earth did anyone vote Labour after the safe hands of the Tories

Pobby - I'm with you. Both parties have had a chance and a very long term in power each to show that their ideals can work - both parties have failed abysmally, both politically, ideologically, economically and, for some, as 'honourable' members.

In no way do I want to be seen to mess up what GG has established - I fully understand why - but I think a hung Parliament is also realistic.

    Two reasons

    - I think there are many non-traditional Labour voters - who voted Labour in the last 3 elections and who will not now do so again - and some (not all) may tend towards the Lib Dems.

    - I also think that Labour's traditional hold on the Scottish vote is weaker now than ever before, and both the Lib Dems and SNP may gain from that.

Sorry - GG - not trying to interrupt what you established - and haven't voted in the poll accordingly.

    A hung parliament IMHO
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

A hung parliament always seems to be imminent but never really happens. I'm not sure when the last General Election in the UK ended with a hung Parliament. There was the Lib-Lab pact of the 1970s but IIRC that resulted from bye-election results going against the Labour incumbents.

There is time for a lot of changes in the national mood - but I just detect that many (and I am one of them) who are asking !!!!!! are you politicians doing to this country - and given the debt burden leaves no one party room for much manouevre - for once and for now, pull together.

    Wishful thinking??? Probably.

I voted Blue but my feelings are mixed. Does n't seem right that they would be picking up the bill for the party! In some ways I would like to see New Labour/Brown try to run this country with his version of Tax Credits, Child Trust Funds and all the other expensive social engineering tools until it becomes bleeding obvious that we never could afford them long term! I fear they will get away with it and leave before our credit limit is reached.
I also think it is time people voted for something other than the two "usual suspects" to shake them out of their complacency, they both seem to feel they have a god given right to take turns running the country whilst lining their own pockets.
