Ideas of where to go for a special birthday

Hi All,

I am going to have a big birthday in September ( I can't bring myself to admit my age so I'll just say I'll be 21 + 19!!!)

I want to go away with some girl friends as I am birthday phobic so don't want a party. I was thinking of going to the Amalfi Coast area of Italy as I've never been there before, but it seems to be very expensive.

I'm looking for somewhere that has lots of nice restaurants, sunshine and something to do during the day. There will be around 4 of us going and one of my friends will be bringing her 8 year old daughter too. It needs to be lively but not too lively. I don't want New York as I've been there alot.

Help!!

You don't say when your birthday is, or how many days you want to go for.

Are you just after a long weekend type of thing?

Sorrento and Florence are both excellent short break destinations

Florence - everywhere is within walking distance
Sorrento - orange trees everywhere, Pompeii and Capri just short journeys away

    oh, and lots of sunshine

You want the Amalfi Coast? My idea of heaven!
Please search the threads we have previously posted here on the subject and bear in mind that I have spent much of this afternoon drooling over this incredibly expensive hotel in Ravello itself...

The video gives you an idea of why I say this town is the most beautiful place I have ever visited on this Earth! Sheer, absolute bliss!

Unless you are paying for the complete shindig I'd ask your friends where they want to to go and how much money they want to spend on your 40th birthday.

Garbo eloped to there. Virginia Wolf stayed there and D.H. Lawrence reputedly wrote 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' there. Even Churchill stayed there, so that's a pretty special place in anybody's book... ;) The funny thing is that I only found all that out after I returned to the U.K. Until that point, Ravello was the place that had fascinated me in the Lonely Planet guide book and a Maeve Binchy article in a sunday magazine.
Compared to 2 weeks in Fiji, one balmy saturday afternon in Ravello wins hands down, and trust me on this much...that is high praise indeed. I'm not religious, but I felt like I'd found heaven on Earth.

Whether it be the cheapest B&B on the face of the planet or a half decent hotel, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello will make your 40th so incredibly special. If I were you, I would opt for a bed with a roof. breakfast would be a bonus. With this location, I'd save all your money to dine out in fantastic restaurants with unimaginably stunning views.
My 40th was a home cooked 5 course Italian dinner for 20 close friends (my birthday often clashes with Mother's Day) but if I could have swapped it for one night in Ravello with my friends, I would have done in a heartbeat.

If you can't actually go there , looking at the Sorrento hotel websites is the next best thing. This is my favourite, always puts me in a sunny mood!
