lol we went to little chef for brekkie once one meal alone was over £7, it was cold aswell so needless to say we have never been back since. The problem is being a service they can charge what they like :( next time though i would suggest a picnic!

Services are expensive, although if you go to the "Extra" services they seem to charge high street prices at the McDonalds & KFC's that are in there, also the Somerfields & M+S foodstores are high street prices too.

I always carped about service prices. This was put into persective today when we returned from Dublin.
There in a Dublin sit down fish and chip shop, fish, chips and beans twice, two cups of tea £23.50
Was going to have some at the services on the way home, no fish
no sausages, no beans - didnt bother but had to pay £3.05 for a cheese and onion sandwich - I'll be taking my own next time.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

When we take our family on long trips we try not to eat at service stations as it is so expensive. If you are passing by bigger towns, we often try to find out where the nearest big Tesco (or similar) is, you can get a cheap breakfast there for all the family. Usually they are on the outskirts of towns so you don't have to make much of a detour. We do that when we go to a music festival in dumfries-shire in the summer as its a long drive, I just couldn't afford to feed a family of five at a little chef or similar.

I suppose you pay more at services because you are paying for the toilets and parking, plus they have a captive audience. Take packed lunches and a flask or find a supermarket on/very near your route that has a decent cafe.

You're also paying for the fact they are open 24 hrs a day and have more overheads because of this (heating, electric and staff) so this is why they are so expensive

Far be it for me to defend services but they used to have to pay sky-high rent for their sites
  • At least going to the toilet is free in services though! :T

OK, I am not a fan of service station prices (see above) but thats wrong- service stations do not rob you- they do not force you to buy their stuff nor to even visit them. What you have described is actually theft and actually wrong.
