Help with Ground Rent / Buying Freehold

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but here goes; we moved into our house 6 yrs ago after buying it from my MIL, who had lived in the property for 40 yrs.
The ground rent had always been collected in person by the freeholder the last time was the year before we moved in. Now, we have had no contact or requests for any further payments and given the ladies age I think she has probably died, I have an address from the last receipt, but that house has changed hands recently and so I have no contact name or address of any relatives to whom the ground rent may now be payable!
Firstly how do I find out who to pay to, and I would like to purchase the freehold if possible, but don't know how to proceed! I have looked on-line but cant find the answers?

I've looked at the Land Registry site and the only info I can find is that of the current owners (us) and the price we paid. It dosen't say who owns the freehold! I know the lady who did own it was a spinster, although she did have a nephew, so maybe I need to find her next of kin? How do I do that?0

I'm not sure if these people may be able to advise, but worth a try. http://www.lease-advice.org/The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
