That always makes me curious about the big, fully automated branches in HSBC.

How do they work? Are they assigned to a BM at another "working" branch? Do they have a staff? What do they do all day? What's the effect on sales?

I've never worked at Truro or anywhere like that, I only went in there while I was down there. But there were sales staff there and booths for account enquiries, and other staff available. Presumably with the same management structure as any other branch.

The small "service" branches however are truly tiny. They're run by maybe two or three people, no sales staff at all mostly. They can also be run by people of lower "grade" than a larger branch.

Ooooh, are you talking about the envelope machines? !!!!!!! things are the bane of my life. I'll get in tomorrow and there'll probably be about 60 envelopes, of which 20 will contain cheques because some people don't use the provided cheque paying in machine. And we'll have to do them all while simultaneously trying to deal with the usual Monday queues. Ah, funtimes.
