Car Tax renew now at a cheaper price or not????

Hi everyone,
Just wondering my car tax is due on 30th April and it will cost me £93.50 for 6 months.
However I believe the new budget tax rates come in on the 1st May and from that date my car tax will be slightly cheaper at about £70 instead.
I think that this is unfair as obviously I have to buy my tax before it runs out because its the law but that 1 day away and I could get it cheaper.
Do you think I could get it for the £70 before the 1st May??
Any advice would be great.

Just wait until the 1st May and then tax your car. You have 5 days from the start of the month to tax your car. See the link below from the Avon & Somerset Police for clarification.

I think you may have misunderstood. It says you can tax the vehicle any time from the 5th of the month in which it expires, in this case 5th April.
OP - Can you not walk or get a lift to the Post Office to tax your car on the 1st of May then you're all legal? This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

'It will be legal for motorists to drive or keep their vehicle on a public road without a current tax disc, for the first five working days of any month. This exemption from displaying a tax disc applies only when an application for a new disc has been made before the previous one has expired.'
Cut & pasted from the website. The catch is that an application should of been made before the previous expired therefore I would still wait and like previous poster suggests walk to Post Office.0 -
I get my car tax online. I apply two weeks before it's due and they post it to me. Pretty certain you'd be charged the rate in force on the day the tax disc starts ie 1st May.0

Hi, you get two weeks prior to your car tax expiring and also two weeks after. You can go to the post office now and they will amend the disc to the new rate. This should happen automatically when they scan your renewal.
I worked in the post office for 10 years and they automatically changed the rates with immediate effect - normally an increase though!! So you should be able to do it now as the new disc they will issue you with will start on the 1st May.

Taken from the DVLA websiteYou can renew your tax any day from the fifth day of the month.
If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.0 -
:rolleyes:You don't get 12 days grace after your tax has expired, this is a bit of an old wives tale!
The Police will put in a sighting report/statement to the Vehicle Licencing if you are not displaying a valid disc at any time, but the DVLA would not action if it is within the first 5 days knowing you have one on the way.
It is unlikly that you would be picked on at day one of no excise licence anyway but it is NOT the law!!
I am a serving officer - hope this helps0 -
aww i never new this that helps me thanks for that!! so is this with everyones tax this year as my tax is also due on the 30 april so if i wait does that mean i get it cheaper as its about 1 £100??0

very simple.
park the car in your nearest 24 Asda, friend's driveway, patch of grass etc, etc on the night of the 30th then the next morning go and tax it.0
