I've got Sennheiser PXC 250s, which are great.

You should be able to pick them up for about £60.
  • I am using (as i type) an ipod with Sennheiser CX300 earbuds. Only about 40 quid and are excellent - also very little sound leakage.

A problem with buying good quality headphones is that if they are too good you end up exposing the poor quality of some ripped music (especially some downloaded tracks). meaning that you have to re-rip all your CDs again at the highest quality available!!!

You were ripped off if you paid 40 for them!

They are only about £17 on amazon now.

If your looking for replacement 'in ear' phones I highly recommend the sennheiser cx 500s (rrp 70 quid)

While I love Sennies, and I have Sennheiser wireless phones, the CX500s, of which I went through two pairs in 6 months, have pretty suspect build quality. Both were bought from reputable e-tailers, so they weren't knockoffs.

On both pairs, the rubber coating on the cables started splitting a few inches below where the cable enters the earphone part, eventually splitting all the way up to the earphones, leaving the cables looking horrid, and leaving the wires inside holding the weight of the rest of the cable. Before long the earphones died completely.

I think the problem is due to the coating not being stuck to the wiring. The wiring can move freely inside the coating, and the coating can kink far more easily than if it was a "solid" cable.

I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-EX71SL in a tesco bargain bin for a fiver a few months ago and the build quality is noticeably better. Sound quality seems comparable to me. Certainly not noticeably worse, but then it's only playing MP3s, very rarely flac or ogg.

I miss the inline volume control, but for a fiver I can't really complain.

I always thought the Sennheiser PX200 were great, good reviews and a good compromise between portability a quality. The PX100's are cheaper but open, so not so good for public places.

Yeah, I'd assume Amazon and Play, iirc (and not "marketplace") weren't selling hooky ones. If they were rip-offs, the sound quality was great. :D Just the crappy rubbery stuff.

I much prefer that style though, so I bought the sony equivalents. Much clearer sound when they're rammed right in your ear.

It also negates the worst bit about earphones, imo, and that's when it's windy and the wind whistles into your ears around the 'phones and you can't hear anything. They also don't fall out.
