How long does it take to rent a house?

How long does it usually take for a rental application to be processed? The letting agency I've found a house with seem very slow and not very pro-active.
When I rented a flat in 2004, I viewed the flat on one Saturday and moved in the following Friday.
What are your experiences with timescales?

Viewed my flat on the 27th of feb, got the keys 16th march.0

ok that's a bit more reasonable than the 4 weeks clairet707 waited...I think I'd be pulling my hair out after 4 weeks.0

Presumably they will be doing checks and getting references, and that can be how long is a piece of string, esp when references requested in writing and not chased up.0

Wow that's longer than I was hoping. When did you give in your application? Was it on the day you viewed?
No we posted it on the following saturday (so 4th April), and signed the contract on the 11th, the landlady was doing a bit of painting and tidying up during the week of 13th April and we got keys 17th
So in reality it was only 4 days!0 -
Turnaround is as fast as the agent makes it. You can be in a house within 24 hours if the finances are in place and the references ready.
Sounds like they need a kick!0 -
That's a good idea, get references ready in advance.0

Ok, 4 days is loads better
I'm expectng mine to be 2 weeks minimum.
They asked for an email address or fax number for my boss so I'm guessing that will speed things up that end, then I've only got a phone number for my current landlady but she's not very reliable so concerned about that.0 -
Have to say, I would wonder why someone wanted to move in so quickly, and would make me think they may not be very organised. Now neither am I, but if I was picking a tenant, I would want them to be.0
