NEW - Redundancy Help. Protect yourself if redundancy looms or you're already there

Just listening to Martin on 5Live, eating a sandwich at my desk, during which have been sent a link to the bid4fees website on facebook and thought I'd see if there had been anything mentioned on the site about it (my girlfriend's on this site all the time at home). I'm a lawyer and even I think it's a great idea. Just placed a few bids myself to give it a try...will keep you posted
Right, I said I'd get back to you about the bid4fees site, so here goes. I've made bids for several cases, won one and lost a few, some are still pending, but on the whole it seems to work... and surprisingly, it's really easy to use. My PA now checks the site every day for new cases we might be interested in, she seems to think it's quite addictive and fun to use. All I can say is that I have found a new way to find new business and keep my practice active. A great, yet very simple idea, wish I'd thought of it. I'm hooked.Validity and morality are two very different philosophical paradigms Googlewhacker...it's obviously a non-starter as a debate with certain people.
...can you explain why you're accusing me of spamming, as although I'm relatively new to MSE, I'm well versed with general forum protocol. Am I missing something here?
Spamming is where you post something about a product or service that is for the gain of the person posting which maybe dressed up as helpful but is done in an unethical way.
Now as your first three posts are all pointing to this service that no one has heard of it can lead people rightly or wrongly to presume that you the poster are pushing this website as it is your website.
Also If I owned a business and validly needed to make people redundant then there is nothing immoral about that. The question comes where a company is making a good profit (what they would expect to make) and uses the current situation to make redundancies, that would be verging on immoral. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

You would be better of starting a new thread but if he is bought out then he probably is covered by TUPE and I would have thought he would have continuous service and as such get a payout. But as I said, start a new thread for more replies. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I'm not really sure why you would view my posts with suspicion, I thought they were fairly clear and believed I was simply adding to comments previously posted.
By the way, a valid redundancy is not immoral. You will hopefully note my specific use of the inverted commas around 'restructure'? This method of downsizing has unfortunately become the trend amongst employers exploiting legislation during this economic climate.
If this is the response people generally receive following registration with this site and genuinely attempting to add to it's forums, then I'm amazed... its like some weird initiation ceremony

Please can anyone help? My boss came to me & some of my colleagues last week and asked if we had any income protection insurance in place? I haven't and was advised to look into this asap. I did get a few quotes turning out at between £40 - £60 a mth to cover half my salary for 12 mths. I suppose it was good of the boss to think of this but obviously we’re all a bit concerned about this but have been told nothing more. Then early this week we heard that my boss was attending an ‘emergency meeting’ with head office we think to do with cutting costs. Although nothing official has been said rumours are abounding of redundancies and pay cuts; and the organisation has been undergoing ‘restructuring’ since early last year.
Now what I’m wondering is if I’m wasting my time with any insurance as surely they would refuse to pay out under these circumstances? I would be happy to take a reduction of hours if this does become an option but if I take out IPI and then get my hours reduced surely if redundancy then happens this would be a sign that all was not well with the company and invalidate any future claim? Would I be better to wait until any reduction of hours is agreed and then get insurance? Or not bother at all? I just don’t want to be paying out high premiums while I’ll be struggling financially anyway with reduced hours on an insurance that is very unlikely to pay out anyway?!
Any advice appreciated guys!0 -

you have to bear in mind that this is one of the busiest websites in the UK so it is not uncommon that people sign up to push links, their own businesses etc. If that is you then shame on you, if it is not then I hope that whatever site you are pushing is a good site and not a conning one The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Hi Sloganjerry,
If the redundancy is made as a formal public announcement, then will have to declare it when you buy your payment protection and chances are that most insurers will not sell it to you at that stage.
Also several insurance policies come with a 30 day no cancellation fees policy, so better to buy now and if you get to know your situation with in that time period, you can choose to keep or cancel but at least you have some protection in place0 -

From what I can see, the fact that it is "one of the busiest sites in the UK" has led to an outbreak of melodramatic paranoia ('shame on you' 'conning' 'pushing'). The site I have mentioned (not pushed) seems to be excellent, but if things change I'll report the negative aspects when/if they occur...I naively thought that was the whole point of consumer forums?

I work for a company that is paid by the local council to support vulnerable people. Cuts were announced months before the government cuts but we were instructed not to tell the clients, or anyone else, under threat of early redundancy. Is this allowed?? We were told back in June that the contract would end in March 2011 and we would be made redundant then.
Now the cuts have been anounced, people are beginning to ask how the service will be affected, and I'm finding it hard to know what to say. We have been told several times in the last couple of months that letters will be sent out to everyone soon, but no sign of anything yet. We were told last month that we would be given our formal 3 month notice in November but now we've heard that isn't very likely.
We keep hearing lots of rumours about what's going on but nothing is ever told us directly. All of us "lowly" workers feel we're being treated really badly and we're not sure of our rights. We keep hearing hints that the company might be able to get funding, so because none of us really know what's going on we don't know how hard we should really be trying to look for other jobs.
I'm applying for jobs everyday but haven't managed to get an interview yet. What do people think?0
