As far as I know, the Welsh speak welsh in their own country, dont they? Fair enough.
and out of their country if travelling with other welsh speakers. they will speak english with other english speakers just as any 2nd or 3rd generation pakistani would. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
The language thing is an intyeresting but peculiar turn in the debate,
who decides which Swiss citizens are Swiss on language? and Canadians? In Papua New Guinea I have heard there are more languages than any other country. If it comes down to languages being a defining factor again, we need to recall an awful lot of Brits abroad but open the boraders to a vast number of first and second languish English speakers: many second language english speakers have a far better grasp of the language than many of us. I do believe people should learn to speak the languge of the country they are in, thats not my point.0 -
Now, I am very confused, why do you think there should be any cost of "of housing and feding immigrants"? Immigrants work. Like everyone else. Maybe you are thinking of asylum seekers? Asylum seekers are not immigrants. They are allowed to stay in the UK until it is safe to go home, then they go home.
To answer your question, not all imigrants work, therefore they have an obvious cost to the taxpayer and country as a whole, in terms of benefits and housing costs.
Those imigrants that do come here to work may pay taxes and support themselves, however, with no process for assessing whether or not we need their skills in this country we often allow in immigrants that go on to take jobs where we have uk citizens available to do those jobs, (such as the situation with eatsern european tradesmen undercutting uk tradesmen)creating a negative effect on our employment levels. Plus all these immigrants (working or not) need housing, which in turn creates a shortage in available housing, which in turn results in higher house prices and rental prices.
With regards asylum seekers, well they are not allowed to work, so they can not be personally critised for not doing so, however that does mean that once again the taxpayer is forking out to, house, clothe and feed these people. then of course there is the simple fact many asylum seekers simply "disapear" when the government say it's time to go home, which in turn incures further cost in tracking down, processing and deporting these people.
So in most cases, one way or another, immigration has a cost, and the U.K can not afford these costs in times of recession.0 -
If the BNP ever get any sort of power base, blame will be laid firmly at the feet of the present government, who seem more intent on trying to discredit the BNP, instead of looking at the reasons why people are voting for the BNP.
i don't think they waste much time trying to discredit the bnp. they are not a serious political threat. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

the majority do learn. i think possibly dervish was arguing about those who despite knowing how to speak english continue to speak other languages amongst themselves. (it's hard to know with dervish though as her own use of the english language is, shall we say, 'unique').Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

yes this happens but it's an extremely tiny minority. i challenge you to prove otherwise. plus new legislation is now in place to minimize this (life in the uk test for permanent residency / citizenship and english tests for spouse visa). plus foreigners not speaking the dominant local language is by no means unique to the uk.
there are also britons who can't read or write in their own mother tongue. whilst this is shocking it is hardly significant enough for the country to grind to a halt. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
what unites British people? :
The English language for one (or it should) .
having discounted the english language as not the only so-called indigenous language of uk, have you got any other unifying factors? Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Where have you heard that from As to the rest of your post it has deviated away from the thread. Also the britons who can't read or write in their own mother tongue. Who is to blame for that if not the government/Street culture/ and the education system. And with a blend of our cultures :rolleyes:NO!MY NAME IS NOT WORZELIM JUST FEELING SLIGHTLY ROUGH TODAY0 -

I have Thai friends who all now, having spent years working and paying taxes in the UK, have British passports and citizenship. Surprisingly, when they are talking amongst themselves, they choose to speak Thai.0
