Suggestions on which credit card to apply for

I already have a Capital One card (got this sept 2007 I think) with apr of 30.34%, limit is £1100 with balance of about £420 I think. I did get it down to just under £300 but 4 vet trips later and its crept up again.

I did get sent some Cheques from Capital One this morning but have stuck them in a drawer with a view to shredding them later as its 34.95% apr on them.

I'm wanting to see if I can get a more mainstream card with a lower apr on it and ideally balance transfer the £420 across .. thats if balance transfers are allowed on such a small amount

I've been clean and sorted out for credit for past 8 years and seem to be able to get phone contracts fine. I haven't applied for anything else within the last two years as been sorting myself out and didnt need a credit rating. There is a thing going on with Eon/DCA at the moment but Eon say it's all fine now and I don't have to pay (old debt but I proved 75% wasnt mine and that I'd paid whilst at that address). I think my credit rating is ok but I daren't check it to be honest.

So which card to get ?

I bank with Barclays (but don't want them as had one of them previously and screwed up using it) and have basic account at HSBC. Ideally looking for card that isnt either of them.

13 months at 0% is currently available to new customers from Halifax on balance transfers made in the first 90 days. There's a 3% BT fee.
Minimum monthly payment is 1% of the balance shifted ;)

If you meet the requirements you may be able to get help with vet bills by going to a charity. Like PDSA https://www.pdsa.org.uk

There's lots more and your vet will know them if you can't find one locally.

I don't claim council tax benefit or housing tax benefit so don't qualify for the pdsa option at our vets.
  • If you have any savings I would use it to pay off as much as possible off your card, that interest rate is criminal. Once it's clear get rid of it. Shred those cheques now to remove any temptations to use them.
Nothing to see here, move along.

    Savings = £50.

I know the interest rate is high hence wanting to go for a better card. Capital One has been good for building up a credit score though.

You may still be able to get help. My local vet college run surgeries too. No questions asked.

And if you really are struggling you could get someone on those benefits you mention to register the pet for you as their pet. I know this may not be perfect but it doesn't stop you paying the full PDSA bill. The PDSA charge every customer and you're asked to make a donation. If it makes you feel better pay the full amount (much lower still that a normal vet).

These are tough times for people and if it meant I'd have to pass the care of my pet to a relative I would.

Or you may want to consider pet care insurance. Many charities (inc the PDSA) run schemes along with the usual insurance companies.

Have I said I am struggling to pay vet bills ? Who are you to presume anything about me, my situation or my animals.

A - we don't know many people round here and those that we do know are not on benefits
B - you presume that we have not looked into the PDSA option, we have
C - why on earth would I pass care of my animals on to a relative (who lives across the country) in order to stress the animals out even more by moving and going to a completely new vets who know nothing of their history and would have to go through everything all over again
D - why on earth would I pass care of my animals on to a relative who I know would not be able to afford looking after them
E - I have looked into the insurance and would not be able to get insurance for one animal and do not need insurance for the other one

IF .. I was wanting help with pets, psda, paying for vet bills and looking at insurance then I would have gone and posted in the blooming pets section.

If you hadnt noticed ... this thread is about getting a new credit card in order for me to drop the current APR that I'm paying

Now kindly stay on the topic subject or bog off ... when I need help with animals, I'll ask for it in the right place

Thanks moggles and Innocent - Got the letter this morning and have been approved with typical 17.9% apr variable with the balance transfers at 0% etc etc.

I don't know what my limit is yet though
