Both the BBC and Guardian calculator would be much better if they had the same front screen:
Age:
Salary:
Kids:
etc. etc.
Then you click the button that says 'Find out if you're better off', the page refreshes and it just says, in big red letters:
"OF COURSE YOU'RE NOT BETTER OFF YOU F**KING IDIOT! ARE YOU MENTAL?! THE COUNTRY IS £100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 IN DEBT!! JESUS CHRIST ON A BIKE!! BETTER OFF?! I ASK YOU. SURE, YOU MIGHT SAVE £10.83 ON NI, BUT THAT'S NOT MUCH COP WHEN FERAL GANGS ARE ATTACKING YOU FOR FOOD, IS IT?!? I ASK YOU INDEED..."0 -

I have just done the BBC calculator and, apparently, will be £231 better off. Everyone seems to be better off - how does this budget intend to save any money?
I have no kids either. Am I supposed to be better off if I've got no kids? In a financial way I mean...0 -

Mm, it's a moot point I would say. You might get some tax credits if you have kids, but the loss of one partner's salary or the cost of childcare if both working, probably cancels it out!0 -
