keeping a phone number with a new contract?
Can anybody tell me what you need to do to keep your phone number when you move from one supplier to another.
My bf's phone contract ends on Monday with Orange and he's thinking of going over to T Mobile.
Does he need a code of some kind?
I've never done this before!
Thanks

He needs to phone orange and ask for a PAC code (port authorisation code) then he needs to give it to t-mobile. This gives t-mobile the permission to take the number away from orange. It might take up to a week *i think* for this to happen but when I last done it, going from orange to 02, it happened overnight.

If his contract ends on Monday you will need to get the PAC code sharpish and it is unlikely that time will allow for this. If you ask Orange for the PAC now it might extend the contract beyond Monday.
The best thing to do now is to phone Orange and ask them to convert the contract number to Pay As You Go. They will then send you a new SIM with the number on it, and probably £1 in credit. Then when you get a new phone contract sorted you can call Orange and ask them for the PAC.0 -
Well he just tried to do it and Orange refused, saying that he had pay for a further months contract as they would have to change his cancellation date to today. She said if he did this she would be able to text the PAC code to him today.
So he's decided to change his number! We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I suggest that you call Orange again and ask them if they will convert it to PAYG on Monday. They probably will and that will get you out of the problem of an extra month line rental.
Also you may find that if you call again that you may get someone more helpful. Another point worth noting is that you might call them and ask to speak to their 'retentions' people. But they may only be there Mondays to Fridays!0 -
Hmm PAC code department is closed now for the weekend, if you just ring them up on monday they will text the number to his phone instantly. It does take 7 days for the number transfer to go through to T-Mobile so you'd be billed by orange up until the next monday and that would be that. So don't worry bout contract extension
