Diabetic Dog Food ??

Hi, My ten year old dog, a Samoyed, has just been diagnosed as diabetic. We are just starting on daily insulin injections and re-organising his diet.
Can anyone recommend a dry/wet dog food that is acceptable for a diabetic dog? At the moment he is not eating any solid food and our Vet has given us liquid food which we have to administer with syringe which distresses the dog. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, Im sorry to hear about your dog, it will be a worrying time for you. Our dog was diagnosed diabetic this time last year. The vet recommended chappie dog food. You can get this in tins or dry in bags, it is one of the cheapest dog foods about but it is one of the best. I think royal cannin do a diabetic dog food but this is very expensive and we have not tried it.

We started off with the tins of chappie and are now giving only dry chappie moistened with water. Our dog was none to pleased when we had to stop his doggy treats and the 'extras' that would go in his food bowl, But he did get used to it.

It can be a very distressing time for you and the dog to begin with but I can assure you it does get easier and more managable and therefore things seem better. Good luck and I hope your dog starts eating and stabilising soon.

Sorry to hear about your boy. The vet should advise you but I believe Royal Canin do a suitable food.

Why is he having the injected food? Is it because he wont eat?

Hope it all works out for you. Its such a worry isnt it. x
  • When my old dog was diagnosed with diabetes, the vet said not to mess around with her diet and to stick to the dry complete food that she ate and enjoyed, but just to avoid giving her any additional treats.

Many thanks for replying, We are having to inject liquid food as he will
not eat anything solid, and he needs a meal before injecting the insulin,
  • Will he not eat his old diet at all? If this is the case I would ask the vet for advice on a suitable food to wean him onto. What food was he on before?

Thanks for your continued interest, his normal food was Bakers Complete but he used to get a little of what we were eating for our main meal before he ate the Bakers! Now we can no longer give him the starter, on the Vets orders ,so we are having to syringe liquid food, supplied by the Vet, before his insulin injection which he is not at all happy about. Our concern is that he apears to be getting weaker as his food intake
    has dropped dramatically!

Hi, are you in regular contact with your vet to let them know your concerns? We used to visit the vet twice a week. Also was your dog heavy before his diagnosis. I ask this because while our dog was not fat he did loose a lot of weight when he was diagnosed and we had to give him a strict diet. I know your boy isnt eating at the moment, but we were reasurred by the vet, with our dogs weight loss by the fact that before his illness he was at the top weight for his breed/size and he is now at his slimmer natural weight. I do hope he starts eating properly soon.

Hi thanks for your input, our main problem is that before the diabetes diagnosis, he had his main meal in the evening, he eats very little in the morning! which is when his insulin injection is due. We are seeing the vet regulary and are hoping to change his single daily morning injection injection to the evening. As far as his weight is concerned he is at the top of the breeds weight range.

Oh Duggy, do try to get him on to better food than Bakers, which is just about one of the worse on sale.
