Probably not much help this but have you looked into sea travel to the US via Guam? As it's US territory there might be a bit of traffic to and from there...?
The very best of luck with your trip. It sounds absolutelty fantastic. Have you thought about making a diary of your travels? As the public are starting to think 'greener' then it's a subject that might get snapped up by a publisher - it might even pay for the trip itself in the end!

Now that is an idea!0 -
Okayyy - this might not fit in with the ethos (if thats the correct word) of your trip - but I'm guessing a Pacific sea crossing would take several days? Would you consider cheating a little and flying across - on the grounds that that would give you the equivalent amount of extra time to explore stuff on dry land?0

Reluctantly yes, the cheapest flight i could find was from Seoul (South Korea) for £1300 (total)
Now i don't mind paying that, but when you consider £1300 is more than what it would have cost to travel all the way to Seoul from UK. Not only that i quite like the idea sailing across the pacific, especially given i am sailing across the Atlantic.
Im stuck in rut0 -
Hi Surll
Im really interested in your trip. Could you give me some details as I would love my husband and I to do it sometime soon? Is it all on rail through Russia? Any info ould be fab.
As far as from Hanoi to USA you could tyr Air Asia to KL and then out from there.
Im not sure if they have a route but I hope it helps.
Thanks

Hi,
The best place to start is this place: http://www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm
I started with that and then just added my own variations and extensions.
Booking tickets is the hardest part so i got in touch with this person: http://www.russiangirlfriday.com/ who booked my tickets at Russian prices saving me approx £800
It would take me an absolute age to post all the details. But i have given you the best places to start.
Best of luck.0 -
Sailing across the Pacific would take an age, and would actually be boring for the kids. However, if you are determined you might well be able to hitch a ride on a yacht. Professional yacht captains make the crossing fairly regularly, ferrying boats across for busy owners who want to sail their pride and joys in new places.
On your way to Shanghai, you might call into Hong Kong and hang out in the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and see who you meet, and what gossip you hear. And/or make your way to the Philippines and visit the yacht clubs in Manila and/or Puerto Galera.
Flying across the Pacific would really be more practical, and I'm sure you can find better fares in the Far East than those you see here.
Will your route use the Kunming - Hanoi railway? I have heard it is a wonderful ride, but it was closed for a very long time.0 -
You got room for a little one Sturll?0

It is easier the other way round, the RTW cruises tend to go that way.
There used to be some repos from the far east to US but not so many now
here is one for next year
http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=10777
or next week, cheap only £1kpp for 23nights.
http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=29752
Could try via Hawaii.
There are some proper cruises but they are not cheap and take a long time(60+days) might be able to get a short leg on one of them.
This will probably be the hardest to sort out might need to replan round this bit.0 -
Are your timings realistic? It looks like you've only given yourself 30 days to get from the UK to the US going the long way round. I would be amazed if you can manage that.
Don't know about timings from East Asia, but freighters from Australia to West Coast US take about 3 weeks. There's no way you'd be there by July 30th.0
