My friend's got a replacement PAYG O2 phone she's using the same sim card as she had before - but she's getting texts (that she has not requested) and getting charged for them.

Anyone had this before?

What do you do about them?

The O2 shop that she got the phone from have advised her to text the number back saying "STOP". Would that really work?

    No idea whether it works.

But I suggest she writes to the O2 saying something like 'Thank you for yr advice about my unwanted texts. I confirm that you have told me that if I text 'STOP' to the sender's number, I will stop being charged for these texts.' Send it recorded delivery - then she'd be in a strong position to refuse to pay O2 for any subsequent charges! ;)

it should work - they're trying to make it industry standard so you can unsubscribe... it works on most now tho

They should make it an industry standard that if a company sends you a text which you haven't asked for, and charges you for it, they get fined.

Thanks for that - she ended up getting 3 or 4 all together (at £1.50 each!) She thinks it's sorted.
  • let me know if she gets her money back from the company concerned (sender of the text) as well as from the mobile provider- I had the same problem and after a fair amount of hassle wit T mobile i managed to get them to cough up the text costs and got the text company to unsubscribe me without texting back to them (which would have cost me another £1.50??) as they agreed i had never subscribed to them in the first place.

    Hello
I'm not sure if this the right bit of the site, but I was hoping someone would be able to give me a bit of advice.
I don't usually check my phone bills (stupid, I know) but have thought for the last few months that they've been higher than they should. When I checked my bills, I found out that I'd been paying £1.28 more than once a week to some company - paying for texts that they are sending me! I've never signed up to a ringtone, screen saver or anything like that to my phone. Orange said that I can't do anything about it and that just by opening a text from someone can be like signing a ontract. How is that right?!
If anyone could give me any advice on this I'd really appreciate it x

    HELP

I had exactly the same problem but with clubs and bars in Birmingham. It was driving my crazy as there was no number to send "STOP" back to! This carried on for years until one text message mentioned a website where you could buy tickets. I went to this website and emailed them telling them to remove me from the mailing list and also mentioned that it is illegal to send these texts out without allowing the recipient to text back "STOP". They emailed back saying that they were not the organisers of the text messages, but would try to help me out. Less than a week later, I received another text message from a B'ham bar/club but this time, instead of coming from "Custard Factory", "Medicine Bar" etc, it came from an actual number, and at the end of the text, it mentioned to text back "STOP" to stop receiving texts. Needless to say, I did this straight away!
