Flat Dilema - share with girlfriend and best friend?

  • My boyfriend and I lived with another couple and a pair of sisters for two years, it was great! We were all at uni, so understood the importance of working hard and giving each other space. My boyfriend and I also had a whole floor of the 6 bed house (two bedrooms and a bathroom) to ourselves, which really helped. If we wanted to feel like we were living alone, we just went to our floor and pretended we did!

Have you considered living with another couple, rather than just one person? If there are two extra people in the house, they can keep each other entertained if you and your girlfriend want to be alone. If your friend is on his own a lot he might begin to feel left out, and you might begin to feel his presence more!

We're likely to be in a new-ish, city centre flat (I need good access to a rail service) so more than likely to be on the small side.

3's a crowd is more likely to be felt in a flat than more spacious house?

Think how noise travels from bedroom next to lounge in a flat ... all night!

Definitely felt more in a flat but shouldn't be much different.

Have you looked at larger properties and the cost if you were to share with a few more people? Perhaps you could benefit from economies of scale? Worth the research i think.

    Well said, you'll here everything!!!!

Perhaps in a house there may be a seperate living room and a lounge area so that there is personal space?

  • Why do you have to be city centre, can you not rent a house just out of the city near a major station?

For example, we live near E.croydon station and there are direct fast trains in and out of the city all the time. And the cost of renting a house here is prob about half that of renting one inner london. I have tons of mates that do exactly what you are saying, the commute is not bad and you get more for your money!

I dont know if you mean commuting in and out of london but its an idea.

Wise Words: do not share your girlfriend with your best friend :rotfl:

Nah on a serious note, is your friend also studying ... or will he be working - in which case NOISE could be an issue if they are not in a similar studying position as you and your girlfriend.

Also, you must know your friend's living style (cleanliness, noise etc and you trust him not to accidentally sleep walk into your room when your girlfriend is asleep and you are in the shower)...

Based on the above if it is still a go-go, then this could be OK

It could go either way. Space is tight in a flat and walls are thin, and they friend may feel left out if you do things all the time with the ladyfriend.

Might work, though I know it certainly didn't work for me - I lived with a girlf at uni in a 4 bed house we didn;t share a room. We didn't last
  • Looks like we may be going for a 3 bed with another friend in a bigger house which will be better for all parties & cheaper

Thanks for everyones views on this
