Flat Dilema - share with girlfriend and best friend?

I'm starting an MA course in September and also due to move in with my girlfriend. We'll both be students so money will be scarce so I'm thinking of asking a friend to take a second room rather than go for a one bed flat.

We'd save valuable money, but would we regret having a lodger and less privacy? I've known my friend for years and couldn't think of a better person to lodge with us. It'd only be for 12 months.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

I've done it before and turned into a negative experience, but this time its with different people!

cheers :D

What does your girlfriend think about the idea?

  • I think she'd much rather have no lodger, as we've been trying to get somewhere to live for a couple of months but I haven't been able to find regular work in my field so unable to commit.

Financially we'd be cutting £200 p/month off our total rent which we can use to fund general living expenses / travel.

We're both early to mid 20s and I feel we should set up with a friend whilst our studying is completed.

    Sound idea?

In theory yes. An it is a moneysavingexpert idea. However, she may be viewing this as the next progressive phase of your relationship so having your friend there be a bit of a no no. However, i'm sure you know your girlfriend enough to know if she thinks this idea to be acceptable.

Does she get on well with your mate?

  • They've only met once or twice but they're both pretty easy going...

Perhaps you could do a three month trial period, just in case?

My boyfriend and I lived with another couple and a pair of sisters for two years, it was great! We were all at uni, so understood the importance of working hard and giving each other space. My boyfriend and I also had a whole floor of the 6 bed house (two bedrooms and a bathroom) to ourselves, which really helped. If we wanted to feel like we were living alone, we just went to our floor and pretended we did!

Have you considered living with another couple, rather than just one person? If there are two extra people in the house, they can keep each other entertained if you and your girlfriend want to be alone. If your friend is on his own a lot he might begin to feel left out, and you might begin to feel his presence more!

Small place with no sound proofing could be horrific.

    Yep! *shudder*

Our 6 bed worked really well. The bf and I are ready for our own place now, but if we were still studying we'd definitely be sharing with others. It's cheaper, more sociable and loads of fun!

Thats what i was thinking! Recipe for disaster if you ask me. Small space and threes a crowd. If, as already said, it were two other people as opposed to one person, then i could understand, but this sounds like trouble.

    I've been Money Tipped!
It might be better, for avoidiung strain on friendships, to consider a larger house share with more people. :)
