Sorry to hear about your fridge, Guapa1. It'll certainly be easier to manage at this time of year than in the summer
I'll add this to the existing thread we have on living without a fridge, so you can see other ideas

When I moved to my new house, I was without a fridge for 3 months, as my stuff, including the fridge, was in my old flat with b/f, waiting to move when he finished up his job. I found milk keeps fine half-immersed in a bucket of water (assuming you don't keep your house at tropical temperatures) for a few days. I'm veggie, so didn't need to worry about meat going off, and I cooked daily and avoided leftovers. Most veg keeps well out of the fridge, especially root veg. The only thing I avoided during that time were salad leaves, as I didn't think they'd do so well.
As someone mentioned above, block butter is a better bet than spread, and cheese keeps fine for up to a week without a fridge.
Don't panic, it's totally manageableHope this helped.

You probably have a too short time to do this, but see if any of your family or friends have some tiny bar or drinks fridge that you can borrow in the meantime just to keep milk, meat, beer (!!!), anything perishable in. They are usually tiny and can fit anywhere.
If you think that you will be without the fridge for longer than a few weeks, perhaps you can buy a small bar or drinks fridge on ebay very cheaply.0 -
I came across this article from someone who hasn't had a fridge for the past 30 years.(http://littlebloginthebigwoods.blogspot.com/2007/03/no-refrigerator-for-30-years.html
At first I thought the idea was mad but after thinking about it, my only stumbling blocks would be milk and yogurt.
Oh, and leftovers.
Apart from that it doesn't get more OS than that does it?"Finish each day And be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and Absurdities have crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can."

Hi npsmama,
There was a recent discussion on this so I've added your post to it to keep the replies together.

Has anyone tried living without a fridge, any problems?
I ask, because I have the option for a fairly new freezer for free. But my house is tiny and there is only room for the freezer, if my ancient fridge goes. I don't use the fridge for much, milk, marg, eggs, yoghurt. I rarely eat meat, so that isn't a problem.
A freezer would be very useful, for storing the food I grow and pick in the summer ( I'm thinking free blackberries all year, yum).
No fridge at this time of year wouldn't be a problem, as the kitchen is unheated and I have an old fashioned ventilated pantry cupboard that seems to be cold enough for the milk.
I seem to remember my Gran keeping a large stone (marble?) block in the pantry, which had holes cut in it for various bottles etc.
Any ideas, or thoughts would be useful.0 -
for me i couldn't live without a fridge. well prob could if i had to. could u in the summer have loads and loads of ice blocks and use a cool box as a fridge for your milk and every day just replace the ice blocks and refreeze the thawed out ones ?0

When I was very young we didn't have a fridge and we kept a metal bucket full of water and stored the milk bottles there covered with a damp t-towel it kept the milk cool but then we probably had it delivered daily... the idea of the cool box is good#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

We had to do without a fridge for a couple of years, not through choice.(We had no electric supply in a house we were doing up.)
Winter was no problem,we just kept stuff wrapped up in an outside shed.
Summer was a bit of a nightmare. We kept milk in a bucket of cold water in a shaded shed and had to buy other perishables in small amounts daily so we could use them all up.
I have to admit I would'nt want to be without my fridge now,I would waste such a lot and having to shop daily would be so inconvenient.
Personally,I would'nt recommend it.0 -
Would you have room for one of those really tiny fridges?
Maybe on a work surface?
I think it would be hard to manage without a fridge in summer.
Maybe you could get one in a couple of months if money is tight now, I'm sure you'd be OK in this chilly weather.
