Read the thread, Merseyrail is what is being talked about - which is 100% electric.

And for the record, Virgin Trains uses electric trains on the route to Liverpool bar two on a Sunday which are diesel, nor to Virgin Trains use a Merseyrail operated station.

ah, sorry i better update my train spotting manual. :rotfl:

i live near glasgow and drive everywhere, excuse my ignorance on the complexities of merseyrails policies.

sorry, i'll wait until im asked in future shall i?

my original point was that, not just merseyrail platforms come under rail by laws, all will, so regardless of merseyrail only having electric trains the rest of the country does not,and often im sure diesel or diesel electric locomotives will pull passenger trains, which produce equally if not more so harmful emissions to the publics health than a few benson and hedges.
occasionally i get a train to glasgow for nights out, usually get a virgin train as it passes through my town on the way to glasgow from birmingham, which according to wikipedia are super voyagers class 221 which are equipped with a Cummins QSK19 diesel engine producing 560 kW (750 hp) at 1800 rpm.

Indeed. And I was merely pointing out the odd fact that of all UK train operators only one has elected not to ban smoking on all platforms.

Ah this is where the French beat us hands down. About 8 years ago I was flying through Charles de Gaul Airport quite a lot. The smokers just gathered under the no smoking sign and carried on as normal (I might add I joined them) with a look of defiance.
