She's even borrowed money to bring herself up to date,at least she made sure you were paid !
So...
she's had to get herself into debt and is being put on the street and all because she's ill (yes deppression is an illness)
Your so worried about housing benefit..i.wonder why this is ???0 -

Moreover it isn't a a case of just letting her stay she may have to change her own tenancy, enter negotiations with the LL, change the nature of the contract in order to accommodate this.
Housing benefit will back date a claim, she's paid him back what he has had to pay out !
negotiations with the landlord ? ..a phone call !
Its the way he's going about all this..should try helping her if he want her to go !0 -
If it really is going to mess things up then sit her down have a nice cuppa and tell her yr ever so sorry but landlord won't except anyone receiving HB , however you don't want to see her on the street and yr willing to help her look for somewhere near by and you'll even help her move and get settled in.0

But in the meantime (which can take a long time ) someone has to pay that rent bill.
Actually, reading between the lines, I get the impression :
a) The OP thinks the lodger is being a slacker - maybe she knows her lodger better than us ( nobody except the lodger will ever know if the depression is genuine or not )
b)The OP doesn't want the hassle of dealing with housing benefit, forms etc.
c) Possibly the OP thinks if the lodger is at home all day, doesn't need to work ( benefits ) the lodger might become 'entrenched' at home. If everyone else works, it changes the dynamics of the property share ie time spent at home, bill usage etc.
If you have a working lodger and you fall out, there's a lot of aggro but the lodger has a wage and stomps off to a letting agent or another flat share. If your lodger is on HB and has depression, they'd find it more difficult to find somewhere else. In th OP's position I'd feel responsible for that person - I couldn't just kick them out - I'd worry that they had nowhere to go. So the dynamics change.
The OP said the lodger is a friend. I don't know how close or good a friend. But you cut friends some slack. I just get the impression the OP wants to 'close' the situation now before the responsibility/guilt thing gets established.0 -
thanks for all posts guys, right to clarify, somerset you hit it on the head, I want to end this messy situation now before it goes any further. I just feel as though I've been duped, this is not what I signed up for, she is at home all day, puts the heating on when she's nippy and then her electric heater too, so bills have been daft, she bought a motorbike 4 months ago that she can't even ride as she has no licence and is paying for, and as for no compassion, I have been diagnosed with derpression and anxiety myself now and put on proponylol yet I work 2 jobs, to pay the bills! I am all too aware of it thanks! I see her out buying things, going out on nights out etc so ever likely I feel peeved when she says she has no money! oh and she didn't borrow money to catch up it transpires it was a policy that matured. I'm not some baby eating harpey, just not a softtouch! and the landlady is fine with subletting but doesn't want a hmo situation and so as my paying guest it means we don't have to go down that rd.
CC limits £26000
Long term CC debt £0
Total low rate loan debt £3000
Almost debt free feeling, priceless.
Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.0 -
My exp of housing benefit is that it takes ages to come thru. In my situation, I was guarantor on a lease for a family member receiving housing benefit. Nothing was paid for months, then it came in dribs and drabs, which I received. Then the backlog was eventually paid in one go and they took the money and run. The housing benefit is paid to them, not you, and you won’t know when they receive it unless they tell you.0

its not housing benefit anymore and i have to say they tend subject to completion of forms correctly move quite quickly
