Which computer & which smartphone? Unlimited ££

If you had unlimited cash, which desktop/laptop would be your reccomendation and also which smartphone would be your recommendation?

I have never had this luxury before so have always tried to compromise performance with cost, however work seem to be feeling quite generous! (this is not in keeping with my MSE engrained attitude so they may as well have just given me a pot of gold!)

If laptop I would like a powerful, portable, lightweight (non-MAC) one. Also would like a docking station to dock the laptop in and keep desktop and laptop synchronous as I find it hard when copying data from one place to another, end up with loads of copies of files.

I don't know the first thing about smartphones. Fancy an iPhone but heard the touchscreen is a bit irritating?

I would be really grateful of any recommendations for desktops, laptops and smartphones where cost is not an issue (so I feel like being a little more extravagant than usual!)

Thanks in advance :A

I don't know why it has to be a "non Mac" one; you can install Windows on a Mac if you need to use it for work. Apple are also probably the leading manufacturer of high-end computers (I remember reading a survey that showed 2/3s of all computers costing $1,000 and up sold in the US were Apples), so you're really handicapping yourself by excluding them.

As a notebook, I would unquestionably get a 17-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 320 GB HDD, 4 GB of RAM (expandable to 8), and an 8 hour battery life for £1,949.

As a desktop, I would get a Mac Pro with two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, a 1 TB HDD, 6 GB of RAM (expandable to 32) and a 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display for £5,294.

Throw in a copy of Windows into each of the above systems for less than £100, and you're good to go. So all in all, that little bundle would cost about £7,500. How generous is your work feeling? ;)

As for a smartphone, it would have to be an iPhone for me.

Lets not turn this into a MAC vs PC thing, but to buy a MAC and then run windows would be silly, you pay more for hardware with a MAC but get the MAC OS etc and it all works great together.

So MAC + windows = overpriced hardware without the 'advantages' of being a MAC.

I wouldn't normally look at alienware but just go to there website and pick the top model and add every extra, I do it every once in a while for a laugh.

That's not so. Being able to run both Windows and Mac programs gives you the best of both worlds; it doesn't somehow restrict you. Apple are no more expensive than any other high-end manufacturer (they're in fact cheaper than some), and the OP gave the impression that price wasn't an issue. The OP would have some wonderfully designed and put together hardware, plus the best customer support in the business, for running whatever they wanted to run on it.

Smartphone Had mine for a year abouts, office pays, so, 1 day battery life (or less normally now carry a spare) Windows mobile - not good. Slow, very s l o w sometimes. Software based phone functions and crashes with unknown application unknown number, please try later, I just used it !!! I would smash it to pieces sometimes and rip the screen from the keyboard, really REALLY you don't want one. I get free web access to but really only for mobile web based sites, not even good for MSE site all displays in a long vertical column. Lots of features but not implemented very well, clever phone but it's early days for these things. Just too small, does a lot but not very well, to sum up.

thanks for all the suggestions, going to take a closer look at some of the suggestions now!

As for the "non mac" - the key piece of software I run for work does not work on a MAC nor the windows operating system on a MAC hence excluding it from my search, it is REALLY not worth the hassle of faffing with the software on a MAC for a bit of extra power!!

    What software is this?

Windows on a Mac is no different at all from Windows on any other type of computer. It runs 100% natively. Macs are really just pretty PCs these days.

Smartphone wise, I'd hang out for the HTC Touch Pro 2 coming out in a couple of months. Touch screen with a slide out keyboard, the best of both worlds.

Get an iPhone, I have one and have been blown away by it. The touchscreen is the most sensitive I have ever used, and I've been using MS touchscreen smartphones for years... But I wont go back after the iPhone. The only thing that needs getting used to is the keyboard. But even this works brilliantly after you've used it for a couple of days. Also firmware 3 is coming out soon and this will add a landscape keyboard which will make things easier. Seriously, even 2 years on nothing comes close to the brilliance of the iphone its amazing!
