this really annoys me, what if you dont want a passport, or dont need to because you dont fly abroad, what if you dont drive, what on earth do you have (for free) to prove who you are. you need these things to open bank accounts and things and yet passports and drivers licence are for travel and driving not opening banks (sorry to digress)

Either you want to fly or you don't and the cheapest way of getting the correct ID is to change your paper licence to a photo card.

Also, prices may not come down on BA as they could well have taken a group booking for the flight you want which could have sold out the cheaper, restricted tickets.

im from essex, willing to travel, but most airports are flying the lo cost airlines who i think all want in date photo id.

Seeing as though you're in Essex, Stansted would presumably be the best choice. easyJet is currently quoting about £75 return Stansted-Glasgow - do you have any form of photo ID that you might be able to use? If you're likely to want to go overseas in the next year or so it would be worth getting a passport now - queues are apparently very short right now so 3 weeks is plenty of time.

Alternatively, bmi is quoting £112 return from Heathrow to Glasgow on suitably-timed flights. Legacy carriers tend to be less strict about ID because they're less bothered about making money from 'name changes' when people pass tickets to other people if they can't go than the low cost airlines are. Make no mistake, domestic ID requirements are not for 'security reasons', no matter whan anyone says!

However, I think it's likely to be the train that comes up top for you. Fares are currently around £70-80 for London-Glasgow return, though it's likely to be near enough the same fare for a through ticket from your local station in Essex. If you wanted to treat yourself the sleeper is available for £171 return, though it seems there are no 'bargain berths' available when you want to go.

    (All fares pp.)

Why don't you go and get your paper driving license in the post, as it's free to upgrade to a photo one (at least it was for me).

You might as well go do it this morning.

You could then make an appointment for a fortnight's time with the passport agency. If the driving license doesn't come back in time (mine was very quick) go and get your passport. Your flights from Stansted on Easyjet are saving about £50 anyway, and probably more in travel, so it's not a massive expenditure over and above what you're paying, and that's only if the driving license doesn't come back in time. If it does, cancel the appointment and you're sorted for free!

The only downside is the possibility of having to go to London for a day to get a new passport. But this is what i'd do!

Don't BMI still fly to Glasgow? It's from Heathrow rather than Gatwick but I recall they do lots of services.

Also, Ryanair fly from Stansted to Prestwick. At Prestwick you just go up the escalators to access the train station which has regular trains into Glasgow Central. Very easy journey.
Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...

The train doesn't take that long, and has the advantage of taking you straight into the centre of town. Glasgow Airport is a fair bit out of Glasgow so you need to get another bus/taxi into the city.

Prestwick Airport is easy to get to Glasgow from too.

    Bus is £25

The problem with Prestwick is that with Ryanair the OP would definitely need either a passport or a driving licence, which she doesn't have. The reason we were suggesting alternatives is that other airlines are less strict about the particular types of ID they accept (if they demand any at all), and therefore the OP may find she's ok to fly with what she's got.

Humble apologies for not being au fait with Ryanair's exact photo ID requirements. Merely suggesting alternative airlines which I use for flying to Glasgow which might have been worth looking into... As you see I also suggested BMI too.
