Hi there I need some advice please as i really dont know where to start, our main pc wont connect to the network and i havent got a clue where to look to fix things, i have checked and can get online with my daughters pc and my laptop so that takes it back to main pc which crashed 1/2 hr ago and ive not been able to get online since, the only error message im getting is cannot connect to network but no solution just to check signal but when i search for networks its there:confused:

Have just plugged in blue cable from pc to router and i now have internet on main pc but still not wireless as that drops as soon as i pull the cable out.

Any ideas where to start please?
The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

    Hi gk172,

Do you have Wireless encryption switched on the router ?

It could be that the crash has wiped out the passkey for connecting.

You say you can see the router on the network list, does it say it is security protected?

    Cheers

Sorry for asking, but does your main PC have wireless capability - that is, does it have a wireless network card of it's own in the first place? If not, then you may have to leave it hard-wired to the router. If it does, see if you can find the set-up disc for the router and reinstall the software for it on the pc again, as if you were starting from scratch. Might help reconfigure the pc's settings following the crash.
Where there's a will, there's a way to get something cheaper from somewhere else!! :D

If you are able to connect the PC to the router by ethernet, why bother with a wireless connection at all? Just leave the ethernet cable in and save your wireless for the laptops and other PC's that are not adjacent.
Wireless is slower, less secure and less reliable. It has no purpose if you can use ethernet. It's only of use where you need mobility (i.e.for a laptop) or where the router is too far from the static PC.

So click on it to connect and it should ask for your Wireless password/key.

    ...which of course you have;)

OP, can you clarify that the other PC and the laptop are connected wirelessly? If so, and they're still workng, there is no problem with the router. It must be the wireless adapter on the PC.
What message do you get when you re-enter the WPA-PSK code and try to connect-does it say 'incorrect key' or similar?

    OK, lets try something else.

    - Plug the ethernet cable from the PC into the router.
    - Open up internet explorer
    - in the address bar type http://192.168.0.1 this should get you to the admin screen of yuor router (it may be http://192.168.1.1 but you can check this by going to a command prompt (go to run and type cmd) and type ipconfig/all this will show you (under defautl gateway) what the ip address of the router is)
    - on the admin screen (IIRC, its been a while since I set a Virgin router up) you should be able to change the password. This is the password you need to connect to the router through a wireless connection.

    Hopefully that makes sense

  • errrm very untechie answer here, so please don't shout.

when ours does this we turn off the router and the pc, then turn them back on again and it seems to work, maybe woth a go?

Maybe not techie, but perfectly sensible sugestion to try rebooting the router first. However the OP has already advised that the connection is working to the other 2 PC's, so it's unlikely to be a problem with the router.
