Renting where Pets are allowed? Brighton?

  • I rented a few places in Newhaven where pets were allowed. Ask in the estate agent if they can mention it to the landlord, a lot will say yes.

I live in Peacehaven and dont have a problem with the shops or the buses, there are 3 buses which run into brighton 2 of which are every 10 minutes. The queue in the mornings (rush hour or 2) to get from Peacehaven to Saltdean is diar, i leave my house at 7.10 to ensure i get to rottingdean for 7.30 but thats by car. now there is a bus lane they'd obviously get there sooner. shops, there is a quite large co-op 3 banks plenty of pizza, fish & chip, kebabs, curry houses in the vacinity. 4 pubs 2 social clubs, the dr's surgery at the meridean centre is fantastic could never fault them for speed. oh and perfect for you is 2 pet shops! lol
i like living out here and i'm not an OAP, i lived in central brighton and loved it until i had kids so moved to Peacehaven 3 years ago and wouldnt want to move anywhere else.. unless it was a hot country!
Peacehaven isn't particulary pretty but then neither is anywhere else which is built up in my opinion lol
It only seems kinky the first time.. :A

Contact the local LL association - Southern Private LL Association - and ask whether any of their members have a suitable property or place your own ad locally.

Many LLs will insist in a larger deposit and, in the case of cats especially, that you pay for a flea treatment when you leave the property. Smaller furry things in cages aren't usually a problem for most LLs.

Sorry cant help with the area.

In our ads we state "no pets" purely because we had a house where the carpets had to be replaced because the smell wouldnt come out, even after professional cleaning.

We have a tenant with a dog and one with a cat at the moment.

The dog moved in a few months after the tenant, we were fine with it because the lady is a good tenant. Our only stipulation was that the carpets had to be cleaned professionally at her cost on departure.

The tenant with the cat was with us 2yrs before she asked about getting a cat. Again, no problems. We have a good relationship and know she will continue to look after the property.

Im a pet person myself, so dont have a problem with them in general but have to think practically, even the nicest pet can make a mess or cause damage unexpectedly.

I would always consider an application from a pet owner, the Letting agents know this and regularly forward requests to me and recommend my properties to those who enquire about pet friendly houses. It all depends on the particular tenant and the pet!

Ring round the agents, explain what pets you have and what you'll do to make sure they dont cause damage. You could offer extra deposit to cover the pets. Any good agent will pass it on to suitable landlords.

You might be better off renting privately rather than through an agent. We rent our place direct from the landlady and she doesn't mind pets.

However, obviously it can be harder to get repairs done when you aren't going through an agency. The friday ad and gumtree would be places to look for private lettings.

Rents vary a lot from agent to agent as does the quality for the price so have a look round a few places before deciding. Some areas you might expect to be cheap from their initial appearance (e.g. Lewes Road area) aren't due to their easy access to the Universities.

Have a think about where you will need to travel to regularly and how you plan on getting there.

We have found that the Poets Corner/ Portland Road area of Hove can have some reasonable priced things (equally some that are well overpriced!) and my brother rents somewhere comparatively cheaply in Kemp Town (but his place isn't that nice!). Both of those are well served by buses (Poets Corner is near Hove station too) and have supermarkets nearby.

It may also be worth haggling on the rent - our friends managed to knock their place down from £1200pcm to £1000 (3 bed)!

This is an old thread, but I'll post this anyway

The Sun has an online home search classifieds section where you can choose pets:

Try and get the local paper in Brighton as private LL tend to advertise that way.

Don't ask about pets until you have seen the place and spoken to the LL, then you can discuss that you would happily pay an extra deposit and get the carpets cleaned when you leave, the biggest problems a LL face when pets are allowed is hair, smell and fleas so if you offer to pay more deposit it shows that you will either put the effort in to get the deposit back or they will have to money to rectify problems.

Most flats in a block will not accept pets as it is part of the lease conditions so go for house conversions or a place with a garden.
