Can anyone tell me the standard prices for a dog behavourist please?

I have been quoted £95 for a 2 hour session (East Anglia) to get to know the dog's history and start to put training in place (my 7 year old rescue dog doesn't like other dogs and despite weekly training sessions and having passed her silver award KC good citizen - she still hates them). I have then been told that they will then discuss the costs of any future needs and costs after this.

Is £95 reasonable? It sounds a bit high to me - wish I was paid that much per hour:eek: (I was expecting around £50-£60 for 2 hours but then I haven't a clue!). I can't find any online reviews of this person but they do have several pet training qualifications.

Thankyou.

We paid £160 (which included the cost of a new collar and lead he said would help). The behaviourist didn't have a set time limit as such, he stayed until he felt he had enough knowledge of the problem and had enough time to study the dog, and us. He was in our house for around 3 hours.

He gave us advice at the time and followed this up with a written report 2 weeks later. It did seem very expensive but he was very knowledgeable and I think it was worth it. We didn't have any follow-up visits (our choice) but tbh, with hindsight I think we maybe could have done with one.

Thankyou - so £95 sounds ok then. What was your dog's problem - did it get solved?
  • Hi.
I recently used Barkbusters - don't know if they're in your area. They were £270 (sharp intake of breath) BUT that includes unlimited visits for 12mths. Initially she was here a couple of hours, after my cocker had been checked over by the vet for any health problems. He is a boisterous little chap, but his main problem was pinching things ie the TV remote, mobile phones, etc. and then becoming aggressive when we tried to get them off him. The lady from Barkbusters was here initially for 2hrs, we have a training programme, and have to contact her in a fortnight and she'll come back and see how he's doing. He has improved, but will need more work, so am glad of the free repeat visits.
Not sure if they're everone's cup of tea, but for us, so far so good.

Thanks - just did a search my nearest is around 180 miles away so I guess I'll have a go with the £95 one. But if its unlimited for that price at least you know it can't go beyond that - I would prefer that I think - at least you know where you stand.

Thanks for the info - glad to hear its working.

I used to do behaviour visits, and charged £30 - £50 an hour long session (too long spent on one dog can be wasted to be honest, as it's very hard for owners to concentrate for such long periods).

Do be aware that Barkbusters are a franchise organisation. I don't know if things have changed, but they used to take on people who could pay the sign up fee, but didn't necessarily have any kind of experience with handling animals or people. They also seem to use a 'once size fits all' approach, using throwing chains and other aversives.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

im in east anglia and paid i think £25 for a hour about 3 years ago.

this was a lady that does dog training classes and offered individual training if required. it helped enormously and our dog is much better because of the advise given.

Thankyou guys - I've booked a session - and will just have to see how it goes.

Good luck to the other people with dog aggression (not the people I might add! LOL!) - I sooooo know what its like - people in our town know me + dog and you can see them all crossing the road whenever they see me!!!!

My dog has just passed her silver award KC training - but only through heaps of cheese as bribery - as soon as she looked as though she was about to go for another dog - I crammed her mouth full of cheese!!!!!
