Halti Help!!!

Hi I have a 2 year old Shar Pei who is a great dog but awful to control on the lead. She is just so strong I initially had an harness on her but this didn't seem to slow her down. Someone recomended a halti so thought it was worth a try. I bought one last week at put it on her she wasn't keen and scratched at it. I thought once I got walkig she would lose interest, but as stubborn as she is by the time we had got around the corner she had scratched her face to bits and was bleeding  so of course I had to take it off.

My question is what now do I keep trying or just chuck the thing in the bin.

My only other option is a choke chain which I really didn't want to use but need to make sure I am in full control of her when we walk.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated

well i had this problem with my dog and a muzzle. he is agressive to other dogs (see my other thread) and we put a muzzle on him and he scratched his face until it bled at which point we gave up and took the muzzle off. we also need a halti and i dont know how we will get it on him. nightmare

I wouldnt use one of those halti head harness myself, I have seen lots of dogs trying to scratch them off.

    Have u tried a halti harness? http://www.companyofanimals.co.uk/halti-harness.php
you can buy it from pets@home

you use it with the halti lead and it seems to be quite good.

My dads staffy pulled VERY bad and this harness has stopped him.

good luck, i hope you find something that works. :D

Try introducing the halti gradually :) make it a positive experience everytime and distract the dog from the halti with treats when it ignores it :) Kira hates her nose jewellery but also accepts that when she has it on then it's usually because we're heading somewhere fun and there will be treats involved...
Patience and persistence worked for us :)

Ditto - mine hates her halti, and tries to lie down on the grass and get it off, but I can get it on her with no problems because she knows there's biscuits involved. Also she's got too much sense to rub her face on the pavement so street walking is fine.
You can get padded haltis for dogs with sensitive hooters, which I've found a little better. I've not seen the halti harnesses, but with other harnesses I've tried in the past they've been no use to me because I need to be able to pull the dogs head away when she jumps at people. They don't suit all dogs though - there's a bit of trial and error.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

i think if it was me id pop it on her, give her a treat and then take it straight back off. id do this a few times leaving it on for a bit longer each time so she would associate it with nice things before i even tried taking her out with it on. perserverance is the key here i think. good luck

    I've been Money Tipped!
Ours have had them introduced slowly, always with treats. Occasionally I walk mine and a friends dogs on leads on country lanes to a secure area for their off lead run...but that makes ten dogs: three of them giants, the other strong large odgs. Although its dignified I do like having the security of the haltis. One o mine just doesn't settle brilliantly with hers though, and when we are out she lovingly rubs her head on my thigh every now and then.....she's perfectly happy to wear it as a sort of sweat band, lol. She's actually great now on the lead but I used to take her with two leads, one to her collar direct, one to the halti.
