I think 'll definately give the 64bit a try..............

Now I've got to decide between these two CPUs.

The Intels are so much more expensive too. My only concern with AMDs in the past was that they ran hot and so had to have a powerful HSF. I assume things have changed the last time I bought a AMD was a Duron in 2000. mInd you it lasted until mid 2005.

I am duely tempted to get a dual core 64 as my machine rig just doesnt cut it for games now, its mainly the grx card, I could upgrade that but would prefer a fastre pc with more ram as I do a lot of video editing.

Thats a little too much for me Rex, I was looking at paying about £150 for a cpu, I normally used to pay about £200 for cpu but had to make some cuts in income. Anyhow let us know how you get on. I am sure other peeps would like to take the plunge too.

4000+ Seems to have the edge on 3D scores. I'm sure you wouldnt see any noticable difference between running the two. If I was spending £250+ on a CPU I would pay that bit extra for Dual.

Can anyone see any comparions to Intel and AMD cpu's I no you cant take processor speeds into account, just interested in comparions. I found the Intels to overclock quite good, 1.8@2.4 and 2.4@3.05 etc and they quiet. Havnet tried the Prescotts cores that Intel do though.

It's quite the opposite with regards to heat nowadays. I know what you mean about older AMD's though. My Athlon64 is currently running at 32C and never really goes above 42C. Compared with my brother's Intel (Prescott), which idles at 45 and at load is over 55C, the Athlon is a gem. It also uses a lot less power.

For a performance chart, check this bad boy out:

Anything graphical and AMD absolutely destroy Intel.

Go for a single core if money is an issue. If you look around you can sometimes pick up a AMD Athlon64 3700+ for near that price. I've got a 3500+ and it's still very fast. I too generally don't, as a rule of thumb, like to spend any more than £200 or a cpu.

Nice choice Rex. Dual core is a good idea. You'll like the case too, it's great value for money.

this looks like a better deal for a graphics card, XFX too

Looks good REX are they facing out ATA interfaces in favour of SATA. When I upgrade later thsi way I ony have one sata drive and one other ATA cant really stretch to a SATA drive but would like a good system that is future proof.
