How can I get a Mobile Number?

I have an old Nokia phone which still works. The SIM Card from it is now in my new mobile.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I send away for a Free 02 SIM Card, does it come with a telephone number? I moved my original mobile number to my new phone. So the old phone doesn't have a number.
Basically, I want to know if I can resurrect the old phone (at no cost) and give it to MIL.

Yes, the sim will come with it's own number (or get given one when you register it).

You may need to unlock the phone to use an O2 SIM in it, depends what network it was originally on.No free lunch, and no free laptop
