Intrum Justitia!!!

Hi

I hope someone can enlighten me a little?

I have just received a letter from Intrum Justitia claiming I owe them £155 and must pay within 7 days etc etc

However it gives no details of who I actually owe the money to!

As far as I am concerned I dont owe anybody anything or have outstanding unpaid debyts, other than my mortgage and credit card that I am currently paying off and have never missed a payment.

The creditor is listed as Intrum Justitia Ltd.

I have read many accounts of these people operating on behalf of Ebay or Brittania music but my letter states no other body except for Intrum!

Do you think this could be a scam?

I intend on ringing them first thing in the morning.

Many thanks

Mark

    Hi Mark,

just read your post and wanted to leave a reply.

I'm no expert and no doubt the knowledgeable posters will be along to answer you fully. From my reading of this forum, the general advice is to never call debt collectors. Always write to them, clearly stating that you do not acknowledge the debt as the onus is on them to prove you owe the money.

Some companys do like to try it on, hoping you'd be too intimidated to question them.

There are a few threads that prove interesting reading that are similar to your case.

Hope you get the advise your looking for.

    All the best

  • Personally I would ignore it, I reckon they are trying their luck.

If you want to follow it up then don't do it on an 0870 number, they make money out of this. If you do a search for them on here you will get lots of people that have had problems with them.

    Hi Mark.

    Welcome to the forum.

Please do not phone them. The first letter from any 'new' creditor is invariably designed to shock and scare you in to doing exactly that. Pick the phone up. It will probably contain phrases such as
    Litigation
    CCJ
    Visit from a collection representative
    Within 7 days
    Charge on your property
    Attachment of earnings

These letters are bluff. You have the time to treat this with the contempt it deserves. While some here would simply ignore it, I would send them a 'prove it' letter using the Post Office "Signed For" service.

    Dear Sir/Madam

    Ref: xxxxxxxxxxx

You have contacted us regarding the account with the above reference number, which you claim is owed by ourselves.

We would point out that we have no knowledge of any such debt being owed to The Loan Company.

We are familiar with the ‘Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidance’ which states that it is unfair to send demands for payment to an individual when it is uncertain that they are the debtor in question.

We would also point out that the OFT say under the Guidance that it is unfair to pursue third parties for payment when they are not liable. In not ceasing collection activity whilst investigating a reasonably queried or disputed debt you are using deceptive/and or unfair methods.

Furthermore, ignoring and/or disregarding claims that debts have been settled or are disputed and continuing to make unjustified demands for payment amounts to physical/psychological harassment.

We would ask that no further contact be made concerning the above accounts unless you can provide evidence as to our liability for the debt in question.

We await your written confirmation that this matter is now closed. Otherwise we will have no option but to make a complaint to the trading standards department and consider informing the OFT of your actions.

We look forward to your reply.

    Yours faithfully

  • Thank you for your extremely helpful replies guys, very much appreciated.

It sounds pretty unanimous that I need to write rather than phone, therefore thank you for the template lensman!

Forgot to add, beatts. Do not sign your letter. Apparantly some of the more unscrupulous debt collection agencies have been known to forge signatures onto various documents.

You really have to watch your back with these low-life merchants.

    Hope it works out.
  • What I did was open an account with voiptalk.org, I then subscribed to a local number to me for 2.33 pcm and I use this throwawy number rather than my own. I had paypal problems and as soon as Intrum started phoning 3 times a day I simply divereted the number to their own switch baord for a week or two. Must have driven them nuts, they stopped calling thugh.

I would suggest sending the letter recorded delivery as it may be easier for them to say they never received it?
