It's something they've taken from the ferry companies, and yes they do tend to enforce it. I suppose if you contacted them and told them you couldn't make it or you'd had to return early another way they may let you off, but this isn't guaranteed and it would rely on your remembering to do it. Plus it almost certainly wouldn't work twice as you were planning!

What if you use a pre paid credit card with only enough money on it for the cheap fare, then book your next return when you are on holiday?

Surely there's nothing they can do about that?
