Because they have good benefits in Spain - unemployment benefit is linked to earnings.
Pensions are linked to earnings, theoretically in Spain if you have paid into the system for about 40 years pension could be the equivalent of your salary averaged over the preceding 8 years.
Why would they want to come here?
if you claim unemployment for a year, you are no longer entitled to benefit until you re-contribute to the system again.
once the year is up - you don't get anything else.
unless Spain do get their act together soon there will be more economic migrants for Spain in the short term to medium term.0 -

ah, of course. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Students learning English, throw in the Poles and the Welsh it is really weird
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

It used to be 2 years - has it changed recently?
But to get the full 2 years you had to have worked for 6 years
It was on a sliding scale
You were also able to get means tested benefits after your employment benefit ran out. A bit like here. I forget what it was called - has that stopped in the last couple of years too ?0 -

Muhahahahahaha:rotfl:
Classic pessimist blind spot.
For the billionth time, we make a lot of stuff - but we do it abroad. Our net income flows were at there highest ever in 2007 despite ever dwindling UK based manufactuirng plant.
Also you will find Brits in every corner of the globe trading expertise for cash.
Ok we dont bang bits of iron anymore, but we sell a lot of music and TV, premiership, F1, are dealing, hospital builds, weapons, arty stuff wetc etc etc etc0 -
Plus the worlds language is English and this is only increasing.
I use online music forums and posters from accross the globe all converse in English
Awaits usualy pessimist reply that Mandarin will see the death of English, yawn. Beyonce will never rap in Chinese.0 -
Much of the UK's "recovery" will be managed by fiddling the books, slashing services, and forcing even more people into low paid zero security jobs.
Honestly, spend a week in Berlin or Stuttgart and then fly to London. Look at what an utter !!!!!! hole it is.
Britain;s economic supremacy was a pipe dream for most actual Brits during the "boom" - what is the recession going to leave us with?0 -
If I was a gambling man I would say she is British and lives in Portugal

Not far off Stevie. Had enough of crime wave Britain in the late 90s so sold up & travelled. Portugal will do for now, but like Spain it is a cold country with lots of sunshine & no I am no longer in Lisbon.
Would like to return full time to a sane Scotland one day but doubt it will happen.
Sole name as a handle was taken. Surname is same as a certain current Italian leader & for some odd reason I didn't want that
& I lacked imagination over the final choice
Re Spanish benefits. The thinking is entirely different. To claim unemployment benefit you first have to have been employed.
Darling & co as banker's puppets are literally doing whatever it takes to keep the present train wreck money system going & it's working.
Goals one & two are the hardest, three (fooling some of the people some of the time) is a piece of cake, & it's all they need unfortunately..... Anyone can do it; with enough spin machinery0 -

SNAFU.
I'm sure for many in the (ex) industrial heartlands much of the boom was a mirage or reserved for those basking within the calm, clear waters of the SE finance/banking fraternity. To those, welcome back to the real world.0
