I shop a lot in Heron's... if you take your own bags in the smaller of their stores, they give you filthy looks cos you're holding the queue up to use ur own bags as there's nowhere to put them, so you have to 'balance' them on the edge of the checkout!!0

I think the pound thing is also so if local (young) kids find them in streets etc they will take them back to the store to get the £1 - costs the store nothing as the last person using it would have put in the £1 but means the shop saves a fortune replacing all these 'lost' trolleys. I live near a supermarket in housing estate and regularly see local kids rounding up and returning trolleys people have taken home for one reason or another.
Kids round here are obviously advanced...they just find some poor unsuspecting soul who has an almost empty trolley, dumps everything out of it and nicks it to get the £1 (all while your back is turned to get something from the shelf!)0 -
methinks the shops should be paying US (customers) to use their bags, as their logo gets seen by countless other shoppers on the way home.., but they dont pay any commission?!
as for using own bags, my parents used to do that quite often for groceryshopping- mainly the 'organic' (ie, muddy!) potatoes..Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

I have just seen this thread and a quick look at the TK maxx website brings up this:
TK Maxx do not make any money from charging for plastic bags. We are donating profits to the Woodland Trust. Thanks to you we have reduced the number of bags leaving our stores by a whopping 70% and raised over £100,000 for the Woodland Trust. which is the equivalent of 10 thousand trees!!
Any use to you?
It's only a game

I think the main reason supermarkets have now made it so you have to put a £1 in their trolleys to release this is because so many people would just abandon them in the car park instead of putting them back with the others, then the wind would blow them into cars and cause damage, if you've had to put a £1 in, it gives you the incentive to return it to the trolley park to get your £1 back, personally I think this is a good thing and the supermarkets near us have been doing this for at least 4 years now, I always keep a £1 coin in the ash tray in my car for whenever I go shoppingAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00

...so do I then always forget to take it into shop with me!
I end up using another £1 from purse and then have to buy new bags after shopping as I always leave them in car too - have tons of £1 coins in my ash tray and loads of 'bag for life' type bags in boot lol. Some People Live & Learn, Some People Just Live...0 -

Another reason for the pound in the trolleys is that now supermarkets are held responsible for all their trolleys which are dumped or abandoned off site. If the supermarket will not collect them, then I think that the council can charge them for doing the job for them. So it's in the interest of the supermarket to ensure that their trolleys do not leave their property. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0
