Recommendations for Accommodation in Cheltenham

Hubs and I are wishing to visit Cheltenham this summer and are on the lookout for somewhere to stay.

We are not bothered if it is a hotel, a guest house or a bed and breakfast place, so long as it is really nice quality with a good hearty breakfast.

Double en-suite room required, maximum budget around £80 per night.

Within walking distance of Cheltenham town centre.

Any recommendations would be good thanks.

A collegue has a sister who is just opening a B&B, near Cheltenham, it is called Wistley Cottage, they charge by the room and not per person.

    The phone number is

    01242 870210

It also depends on what you call "Walking Distance" to Cheltenham. Give them a ring and see.

Many thanks aerostar - I really appreciate your response. I have found Wistley, but unfortunately they do not show any pictures apart from the outside of the building, and no rates are given per night.

I realise these things take time to set up, and as they are a new business they have not yet managed to organised it on their website.

However, I am after something that can be recommended by someone who has actually stayed at the place they are recommending.

We are not infirm, nor are we in the first flush of youth! Walking distance would be less than one mile - preferably nearer - to the centre of Cheltenham.

    Hi Loobeylou,
I live in Cheltenham, so here are a few places that you might like:-

http://www.northhallhotel.co.uk/index.htm Double ensuite £80 per night
    http://www.wyastonehotel.co.uk/
    http://www.cotswoldgrange.co.uk/ £80/90 double ensuite
http://www.stayatthegeorge.co.uk/ a bit more pricey, but it's only a short walk from the Promenade.

This website http://www.visitcheltenham.com/ will also give you loads of info. Cheltenham is a beautiful town to visit, plenty to do, and so many beautiful places to visit in the surrounding area too - ~Bourton on the Water, Broadway, Winchcombe, Prinknash Abbey, Painswick - any more info you'd like, ask away!

Coffeebean - thanks for your input. Have now had chance to check out your suggestions, but cannot find prices for the first two, the third states "from £80" for an ensuite double, and the fourth is at least £113 for a standard double.

    Have actually requested details from:

    The Georgian House
    Battledown B&B
    The Abbey Hotel
    Butlers Hotel

Have received a brochure from The Abbey Hotel, and Battledown state that it is all on their website and they do not have brochures. That's fine, but I wondered if you could give me any input on any of these four places from personal experience?
  • Try the Kandinsky - it's a little wacky (eclectic!) but is central to the delightful area of Montpellier and has (had!) a nightclub in the basement for the exclusive use of guests. Might be a little more than £80 though?

    Hi Loobeylou,
The Georgian House is in a good position, but parking can be a problem in Montpellier, I see they have two garages at the rear, which is fine if you have a small car, the back lane is very narrow - I know this because my dentist's back car parking is there & I can never get my car in! On-street parking permit is, I believe, after 6pm. However you can park in the surrounding streets if you don't mind a walk to the car.

Butlers, again, is in a nice spot but still a bit of a walk into town, and their website doesn't mention parking.

Battledown B&B is quite a walk from the town centre, a good couple of miles, but it is on a bus route, no idea what the times are though. I'm sure the owners would be able to tell you. Bear in mind though that the last bus from town centre is about 11pm.

The Abbey is in a good spot for the town centre, but not sure where the parking is, there is a big pay & display car park on that road, not sure if they mean there. Also be aware that there is a Wetherspoon's Pub and a late bar and a nightclub on the Bath Road behind the hotel. The club closes at 4am at the moment, may be later in the summer.

moneywasternomore, the Kandinsky is indeed pricey! starts at £105 for a double. The nightclub is still there in the basement. Years ago it used to called the Savoy Hotel, and the Beatles once stayed there when they played in Cheltenham!

Hope this helps a bit, if I think of anything I'll let you know,

Wow Coffeebean - many thanks for all of that. I must admit we had rather fancied the Georgian, but they have stated that they are not able to accommodate us for just the one night. If it had been two nights it would have been a different matter! You would think they would be glad of the business, but they can obviously afford to be picky.

Butlers have e-mailed me, and have stated "we have a small forecourt for parking plus on road parking in Western Road". They also state that it is about a ten minute walk into town - depends on how fast you walk
I guess! In view of your comments we will probably go for this.

I really do appreciate your input on this - we do not wish to be landed a couple of miles away from town as we will probably be doing quite a bit of walking around anyway, and we don't really fancy walking home after an evening in town - we would have had to get a bus or taxi if it was a couple of miles.

The points you have made are really extremely helpful, and again, many thanks.

PS - Do you know of any other hotels around the Montpellier region?

This one is very central but probably also very over-budget! The prices seem to vary a lot for different dates so you might get lucky.

Rebecca22 - Have gone to the website (even though I am sure you will be correct in thinking it will be over budget!) to try to find out their tariff, but cannot find their rates mentioned anywhere - only rates for speciality breaks, golf weekends, etc. Have left a message for them to get back to me but I feel sure that the extremely grand surroundings will result in a megga overnight tariff.
