Help right phone payg internet/e-mail access

Hello from a techno-phobe, my partner visits the UK several times a year, currently he has a UK O2 sim on your country which allows him to ring overseas ie. his home, on free minutes. He is very happy with this, he can also get free broadband via hotspots from his laptop in the UK. Ideally he would like to access his e-mail via mobile phone too, which phones have this facility? Thank you in anticiption.

I live in the UK and I have a pay-as-you-go Nokia 6220c phone on O2. That works OK for accessing my e-mail on the phone's display; it's not quite so simple to use the phone to connect the laptop though it is possible.
