Recently opened Nat West account mentioned above for my 14 year old. We have a local branch. The account was opened over the counter and everything arrived quickly. I think you can open and manage it online. Much better than my experience with Halifax with another child.

Try Natwest adapt. My 13, 15 and 17 year old children have it. It's a current/savings account that allows payments with Solo debit card. It can also be accessed and checked online. It comes with some added extra for youngsters in this age group. My children have no need to carry cash around anymore which is safe and stress free for them and us, i.e. their parents. They find it easy to use, in-store and online. It makes them feel like mini adult without being one yet.

    Worth checking.

My 15yo son has the NatWest Adapt account but was told he can't have online banking until he's 16.

  • Natwest is the best i set up an account for my daughter when she was 13, she got her own card and everything. Now she is 18 they transfered it to a current account and issued her a solo card. At least in thes times when bank accounts are hard to com by-at least she has one allready. Natwest is the best

The Natwest one doesn't really fit with the OP's needs though. They asked for internet banking, and Natwest's online banking is fairly useless really. Other banks will give a card when they are a child (usually Visa Electron) then upgrade it to a full Visa Debit card when they are 18. And the 'adult' Natwest account isn't very good either for when she starts earning ... come on, is 0.1% interest really a good account!?!

Online banking is personal choice, lots of people find it fine.

Natwest Adapt paying 1.50% interest so not much difference to Halifax.

Only downside is online banking only 16 and over, but loads of offers included (2for1 Cinema etc) http://www.natwest.com/microsites/personal/adapt/offers.htm I'm sure the offers are much more beneficial than a couple of pence at halifax.

Oh and a current account that pays 0.1% isn't really good but what about a Halifax instant saver paying 0.1%?? http://www.halifax.co.uk/savings/personalrates.asp#Hx_Instant_Save
If you want interest rates you get a savings account and apparently if they are gonna have a Halifax instant saver they would get the same as a Natwest Current Plus account.

So don't pick the Instant Saver. Instead, choose the Save4It, at just over 1%.

this is a childrens account, you mentioned 0.1% on Natwest current account for over 18's so they wouldn't quilify for save4it account.

Also if someone is getting 1.51% on a young persons account whats the point in them putting money into a savings account paying just under 0.5% less?
