Best bank account for a 14 year old

Options
Afternoon all!

I have a 14 year old sister that would like a bank account. Ideally it would have a cash card and the ability for her to be able to check it online.

She lives in a very remote area and it's very difficult for her to get to a bank/building society. The closest bank is Lloyds.

Can you recommend a bank account? We've tried First Direct and Alliance & Leicester and they said she was too young, neither of them seemed very keen to help her out.

Thanks in advance
Ash

Back in the day I had a Nationwide Smart account, and it was pretty good (cash card, online access, etc). However, they won't give you a debit card, which could be useful if your ever sister wanted to purchase things online or buy things in a shop (without having to withdraw and carry around a load of cash). In my day I don't think they gave kids debit cards of any sort ;p

Halifax's Expresscash account might be the best bet: http://www.halifax.co.uk/bankaccounts/expresscash.asp

Try Natwest adapt. My 13, 15 and 17 year old children have it. It's a current/savings account that allows payments with Solo debit card. It can also be accessed and checked online. It comes with some added extra for youngsters in this age group. My children have no need to carry cash around anymore which is safe and stress free for them and us, i.e. their parents. They find it easy to use, in-store and online. It makes them feel like mini adult without being one yet.

    Worth checking.

LTSB Under 19's account has higher interest rate than the others have suggested. I would recommend that account. http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/under_19s_account.asp

Hi my 2 teenagers 14 & 15 have The NATWEST account - solo card and online banking - although branch location may be a problem if paying in. We have overcome this by my kids giving me the cash and i transfer the money from my account to theirs. Hope this helps

My son has this account too. The solo card works well form him, we have only had a couple of occasions where it wasn't accepted.

Halifax or HSBC are probably the best ones, as they have good online banking.

Halifax's Expresscash account pays 1.51% interest.
