Score! Fighting RBoS with their own tactics

Options
I feel in such an uplifted move after discovering the "reclaim your unfair bank charges" thread in the latest newsletter. I was so enthused I actually took an entire morning off to do this, combed through all my statements for the last 6 years at my various Royal Bank of Scotland accounts (I knew it was a good idea to file them instead of throw them heh) and worked out that they have taken £2,011 in charges!

I spent the day writing my letter to them and compiling my facts. If all goes to plan then within 14 days they will pay me the money, and it looks most likely based upon the experiences others have had.

To make things even more amusing, I currently owe RBoS about £1,300 that they are nastily chasing me for. So this will not only pay off my debt with them but will be a great boost to start a savings account! If this pulls off, which I feel confident it will, seeing RBoS pay themselves to clear my own debt with them will put the biggest grin on my face I think I'll ever have :rotfl:

Ahh Martin Lewis & co., you really are gods :) :money:

    Well hello Amos,

My branch telephoned me 2 days ago to tell me it wouldnt be dealt with at branch level and had been passed to a central area. man from bank asked where i had got the info regarding bank charges as he had received an identical letter on the same day. i said internet but was also on the news. lets wait and see shall we.

we are also doing this... are currently waiting for the list of our charges from lloyds who have been absolutely #hit they have taken thousands off of us which all started from one month where we were in a mess due to new born baby having to go back into special care and them refusing point blank to do anything to help us, first charge pushed us over over draft .. and the rest has been one rolling snowball of history!!!
Cant wait to find out how much it is and then we are going down the small claims court route if need be. I have had enough!!!
Good luck to everyone esle by the way

ooh I had my first ever result from Barclaycard with this yesterday. Not my fault but my employer put me on SSP when I was on jury service. A bounced direct debit cost me £75 as a) charged me for a returned payment b) that took me over my £550 limit, and then charged me again for a second late payment that week. I phoned them, explained the situatiuon and after a bit of begging on my part cash is being refunded. Not only that, but a siultaneous conversation with my employer said that they would also refund any charges i incurred as they made a balls up  so, everychance I coulds actually be a hundred quid in profit :T Nice. I shudder to think what Ive been charged over the years ( only have 3 years of bank statements though) and Im going to have a lookie and see what I can get back myself! Good luck to everyone, and let us know your results!! Ill be watching with a keen eye on this one

    Hey you guys 'n' gals,

Thanks for all your support!! I will keep you updated and I would love to hear about your successes too. I've sent a letter special delivery now and am also going to hand deliver one to my branch and try and get a receipt that they've received it.

To be honest, as wrong as it is, I hope they open it while I'm there so I can see the cringes on their faces :D

bizzy_lizzy: Effectively yes, but you can also claim back any bank charges in the last 6 years on accounts (open and closed). All you have to do really is write a few letters but you may actually have to go to court, so it's up to you. Go to http://www.bankactiongroup.co.uk/ and have a nose :)

Thats astonishing. I could pay off my mortgage with what i have wasted on bank charges over the years. Not so much lately but certainly when i was younger & even less organised than now. However I dont have very old statements so I guess this puts a stop to any claims ?

Did someone says this is a letter on their website that you can use ? Could someone point me in the right direction please. I am at work & trying to look without gtting too much attention !!

    Thansk to all

if you go to the website that amosworks has given I believe the letter is on there. The old statements is a hurdle but not impossible to overcome. I think (someone correct me) that there is a length of time (maybe the 6 years) that banks have to keep records of your statements for. And you should be able to request copies going back this far. I know some people have a had trouble from their banks, trying to charge £5 per statement or whatever! You should not have to pay this though, I'd argue if they try it!

Also there is a thread on this site somewhere all about reclaiming charges, I'm sure someone will give the link!

    Best of luck

    Thanks Kath
Wouldnt it be a dream come true to get some of those charges back. Just thinking of the occasions when OH has not been paid on the correct days ( he always has the sort of jobs where the employer never seems to have enough for pay day) and we have been left high & dry.

Do we know if this area of the law also covers credit card charges ? I am thinking of late payment.missed payment not interest.
