What is the best deal for roaming?

I will be touring France, Switzerland and germany in a few weeks. I have been looking at the costs of roaming on a UK PAYG, and seem to have become confused by all of the figures. I will be looking to use three seperate SIM cards while out there.
Who have people found to be the best/most reliable? My contract is with Virgin whose Switzerland rates are grim.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
