MartyJ Over here! or anyone who has bought a mac with HE Discount!

Hi Marty

Update

Went to the apple store and had a play around with the macbook and had a one to one session with an advisor and he talked me through applications etc..

He did misinform me by saying, that I could only get a discount on software the same time that I bought the laptop. When I rang apple they said you can get discounted software any time with the HE discount.

Anyhow I spoke to my friend with the laptop and she has a lot of current software which I can get for free so I wont need to get any.

With the HE discount theres an agreement with the NUS that the warranty is for a 3 full years automatically which is no additional cost.

So the uplift figure is for applecare. Which I understand is that you get 3 year phone support , international cover and that apple will deliver and collect your laptop for free for repairs.

Now I live about 15mins from apple store and have access to another one back home easily too-so I could easily pop it in both if theres any trouble. (Im hoping they wont be as im always hearing how well macs are built) I know you get 90days phone support initially and also I really doubt that i will be taking my laptop away internationally or on my hols!

So any ideas about the uplift? Yay or Nay and do you think theres any advantage if i tried to sell it having the uplift?

Thanks

I've never heard of a three years warranty that isn't AppleCare.

If they're prepared to give one to you though, and you live pretty close to an Apple Store, I guess it might be worthwhile saving yourself some money. I would probably get the AppleCare myself, but it's up to you really.

My bf and I both bought MacBooks through the ONLINE higher education store. Both these came with a 3 yr parts and labour warranty which was confirmed by email to us. I don't know if you get the same deal instore though.

  • Hi Marty

    I found this:
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/uk_inst/Images/salespolicies_individual.html

Clause 10.1.1 - All Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products shall be subject to a 36 calendar month warranty period
commencing from the date of purchase (the date of your invoice).

Im getting a bit confused about applecare what does it actually do becase i thought that was the warranty?
  • It also says

9.1.1 For Apple-branded desktop and portable computer products only, the 90 day telephone support as defined within the one-year limited warranty provided with the products shall be extended to 1 year from the date of purchase (the date of your invoice). For Support for non-Apple-branded Products you must contact the relevant manufacturer.

So im under the impression that the uplift is just for the extra telephone support, shipping and international cover.

What I am curious is what the differences are in the warranties and whats covered in the HE warranty and whats covered in applecare.

I guess that warranty only covers parts and labour.

    Here's what AppleCare is:

    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/products/proplan.html

    Basically, it:

    - Extends telephone technical support from 90 days to three years from computer's purchase date

    - Extends hardware repair coverage to three years from computer's purchase date, including:
--- On-site service for desktop computers
    --- Global repair coverage

    - Provides dedicated access to web-based support resources

    - Includes powerful diagnostic tools (TechTool Deluxe from Micromat)
  • Ok cool - I think i understand so its the extra services you get for the uplit

If you bought a laptop without the HE discount you would get one year warranty and 90 days support by default

If you bought the applecare too you extend your warranty to 3years and you get the extra support?

So for HE purchases the top line on the diagram will be totally grey and the bottom will stay the same.

So the uplift £47 gives you technical support from 90 days to three years from computer's purchase date
--- On-site service for desktop computers
    --- Global repair coverage
    - Provides dedicated access to web-based support resources
    - Includes powerful diagnostic tools (TechTool Deluxe from Micromat

One more question Marty do you think that having apple care makes a difference on what price you can resell for?

    Thanks so much

Yep. The global repair coverage would be the main thing for me, but if you aren't planning on travelling much, it wouldn't be so important.

I'm sure it would, but I don't know if you'd recoup your £47.

It would give a buyer more confidence though, knowing that any problems with the computer will have been taken care of. It would also suggest (to me as a buyer anyway) that you were a conscientious owner who looked after their Mac.
