in this day and age, with not many jobs any employee should be giving that little extra not taking the proverbial.

I'd still recommend getting good advice first, some people happily take the pi$$ and then take you to the cleaners if they possibly can.
I think with redundancy, you have to not hire someone to do a similar role within some period of time, too...for more info check out www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk . You'll find me there.

No - there is no ban on hiring someone to do similar work - as long as it was not obvious that someone would be required in that role at the time of the redundancy. That is, a company's circumstances can change quite quickly and they could need to replace a redundant employee. In that case, they don't have to re-engage the redundant employee.0
