HSBC Direct Debit Nightmare

Sorry to post yet another thread about HSBC, basically i have been trying to setup a DD for my credit card without success for 3 months now :wall: .

Short story is that in this latest attempt the 16 digit reference number with my online bank account doesnt match my credit card number.

Have spoken to HSBC customer services and they say this is normal and ok.
But tbh i dont trust what they say as i think there was a communication problem, think the call centre was in the USA.

Can someone confirm for me that the Direct Debit reference number should be the same as your card number before I message them to cancel it and I will pay cash at the branch in 1p pieces;) .

How the heck can they be the biggest bank in the world, they are hopeless.

Cheers

    Why the need for complication?

Log on to your secure area, request a DD mandate be sent out (choose either min or full payment), check, sign & and post it back.

I set mine up with them all ok.. done a DD and a bank transfer using the card number (thanks from my statement not he card and it might be all funky like on the First direct one's and it's not obviously where stuff stops and starts!) and the sort code and bank account given on the back of the statement and all has gone through ok!

P.s As YorkshireBoy has said.. that's how I set up my DD!

I too ended up ringing them as the Direct Debit number didn't match my card number - the lovely Scottish lady on the phone explained it was correct and they did it for security reasons or something.

The reference for the DD could be anything the bank chooses - for most CC's it's the same as your card number, but the bank could have another system in place.

For example, let's say your card number is

    1234 5678 9123 4567

You may also have a credit card account number or a cardholder number. For argument's sake let's say it's

    9876 5432 1987 6543

When a payment comes to them with your cardholder number or account number, they will know it's yours because that is another number they use to identify you.

It makes sense really, because when you get a new card (when your old one expires or is lost/stolen etc) it may have a different number across the middle, but it's the same account. Similar to how your current account has a different account number to the card number on the debit card attched to it.

    Hope this makes sense.
