Paypal transaction

Hello Martin and everybody.

Just a quick question to know briefly where I stand,I made a transaction about just over two weeks ago for a purchase for some fishing equipment for the sum of just under 75 pounds,it was done at an online shop attached to a very successful and long established fishing forum ,I payed through paypal but it wasnt Ebay, they have their own online shop which looks professional enough with complaints procedures etc...,I was promised the goods Tuesday before last and after a few emails to the owner he is being very elusive and not replying or saying he,l get back but never does,Ive sent an email of complaint threatening further action tonight...perhaps Im not giving him long enough as Im quite impatient but how long do I wait,I just have a bad feeling that something isnt right here.
My paypal is done through a visa debit card...as I say I sent the email to him tonight so he may reply but what if he doesnt,is my next stop Paypal?
thanks in advance for your help.

well look at their website and they usually promise something but retain the right to need a certain period of time eg 3 weeks. i would wait for now, stop worrying as your covered by paypal and visa for your payment, if you dont get your goods then yes contact paypal and they will tell you what to do next.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • So I should give them another week maybe,I thought you had to act pretty quick with Paypal thats all....I am a worrier must admit.....its a profesionally run website, thats what I cant understand..

hmm im not too sure, never had a problem when paying by paypal.

contact them and ask to check but either way your protected by the credit card company.

and dont worry, we all do it, these days a simple traffic jam could cause a whole delivery to be delayed and we all start thinking scam.

contact consumers direct and ask about the retailers reputation etc
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • hes been vague in replying to emails,he said it would come tuesday before last, when emails are not replied it rings alarm bells to me,Il see if I get any reply tommorow from my compliant email ,if not Il contact Paypal....thanks for yur advice here...

no problem, i find that sending a form of durable medium as your complaint (email or recorded letter ie something they cant claim they didnt receive) and then making a phone call gets the best result as it gets their attention more and gets the problem received in a phone call or two.

but hey thats just me, i would wait, theres far worse things in this world than a late package, if you do recieve it you should probably still chase up a refund for delivery but state any intent to purchase more goods and it may just get you something for your inconvenience, maybe vouchers.

I really dont believe its dodgy as paypal users have to go through all the usual strict checks, i mean it takes 2 months and several stages to be able to receive payments so they will have his details, if he wants his money then theres nowhere he can hide!

    regards josh

If you have concerns then open a basic dialogue in paypal via the resolution centre, that just means your emails to and from the seller are logged. Then if items do not arrive in a couple more days escalate it to a full chargeback. If retailer cannot prove delivery using online tracking you will get your money back.

You have 45 days to do a chargeback so plenty of time yet.

I have now emailed the seller and filed a dispute,it states I have 20 days,I assume that means Il give them up to 20 days to reply but if no thing is resolved then I take it further,is that correct?

  • Yes thats correct - basically from the sellers side of Paypal the amount you paid has been frozen. If he had withdrew all his funds then his account would now be minus X pounds. When he receives money from another sale he will not be able to withdraw the sum until it's over the amount you have frozen in his account. Standard practice with Paypal is you have 45 days to process a claim from date of sale. A common misconception customers make is that those initial messages through the resolution centre are being reviewed by a real person - they are not viewed by a "person" until you escalate the claim if the seller doesnt play ball.

What sellers don't realise is that if a buyer escalates a claim and it then gets decided by a paypal rep to refund in the buyers favour it can cause the seller problems in the future - e.g paypal may freeze funds received into the sellers account for a lengthy period of time (in terms and conditions up to 180 days) before he can withdraw them. This proves a pain if the seller wanted to use the P&P proportion of the sale to directly pay a courier or Royal Mail online shipping to deliver the goods - they would have to stump up their own cash.
