How to cut a hole for my kitchen tap???

I have bought a sink from Ikea, and have just noticed that there is no pre-cut tap hole in it.

How do I cut one myself?

Also, am I able to mount the tap into the laminate work top instead? It will look smarter if I can.

Thank you in advance!

    If it's a stainless steel sink you'd be best using one of these;

If you want to put it in the worktop then use a suitably sized hole saw.

you can buy drill bits that are large - i've seen my mate use one in my house that was approx 100mm across.
It's like a pastry cutter that you attach to your drill and then use the drill as normal so the cutter goes through the material.

    is no pre-cut tap hole

So its a model which demands you bore a hole in the work top.

It might not be. Most Ikea sinks don't have pre-drilled holes. Allows the customer to choose positioning or which side to have the drainer etc. Also saves them having to make so many with different options.

Not necessarily- it does say that there is no pre-cut hole so that you can position the tap wherever you like- I would prefer it in the worktop really.

By a holesaw, do you mean one of these?

Yes, don't forget you'll need an arbor for it too.(central drill bit).

    I stand corrected

Buy a sink from Ikea and you cut the hole

    You answered my question :)

However... I now have two more questions.

What else, other than the holesaw (thanks for the screwfix link) do I need for my drill? I just have a normal corded hammer drill with twisty chuck.

Which side of the worktop do I saw from- underneath, or on top?

You need the right size hole saw for the tap. Make it a few mm smaller than the base of the tap. Also need a Hex shank arbor to suit the size of hole saw you buy.

When you say 'saw' the work top do you mean the hole for the sink itself? What sort of saw are you using?

Also, make sure you seal with clear sealant. Smear the stuff all over the newly cut edges incase water gets in. Worktops are like sponges once they start to get wet.
